US embassy defends quality of American chicken
The United States embassy is assuring Trinidad and Tobago consumers that they can eat US poultry with full confidence.
The assurance came via a release from the embassy following remarks reportedly made by Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat about the quality of US poultry.
Speaking at The UWI conference on “Revitalising the Buffalypso, Our National Treasure”, Rambharat reportedly said US chicken was inferior to T&T’s fresh meat.
"The United States takes food safety very seriously," the embassy said.
"All US exports of poultry must, by law, be inspected and only poultry produced in federally-inspected plants and receiving the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) mark of inspection can be exported."
The embassy said products exported to Trinidad and Tobago are held to the same food safety standards as are products produced for the US domestic market.
"The inspection and export requirements of the United States are based on science and result in poultry that is safe for consumption and exported to nearly 160 countries around the world. Consumers in Trinidad and Tobago receive safe and wholesome food, and the growing popularity of US poultry globally is a testament to that fact."

Rambharat said he dealt with the issue of imported chicken by establishing a requirement that chicken must not be 180 days older than the slaughter date. “Because you can bring chicken...frozen ten years ago in this country.

They seem to think exlayers are contaminated.
And as mentioned before, the thawing etc of bulk packed chicken is always going to be a problem,
Not the product itself per se.
I wouldn't doubt that there are unscrupulous wholesalers abroad exporting actual poor quality expired chicken but to say that all exported frozen chicken parts are contaminated is somewhat false.ElSoc wrote:I'll just leave this here:
