A major vulnerability in how the iPhone handles SMS has been found by security researcher Charlie Miller.

During a presentation at the SyScan conference in Singapore, Miller announced the vunerability and warned of its capabilities.

"The SMS vulnerability allows an attacker to run software code on the phone that is sent by SMS over a mobile operator's network. The malicious code could include commands to monitor the location of the phone using GPS, turn on the phone's microphone to eavesdrop on conversations, or make the phone join a distributed denial of service attack or a botnet."

According to HotHardware, Miller has made an arrangement with Apple giving them until the Black Hat USA expo in Las Vegas to fix the issue.

Apple says they will have a fix ready "later this month."

It shouldn't be too hard to find someone who has a Digicel MMS enabled phone who could provide the proper settings. (At least I'd like to think so)...

I believe they do but like bmobile it doesn't come up on the iPhone so they have to be entered manually.

iPhone Dev Team wrote:Do not upgrade to 3.1 yet if you want this unlock!

Here’s a brief video demonstration by @planetbeing of the iPhone Dev Team’s ultrasn0w unlock for the new iPhone 3G S. Special thanks to @Oranav for the at+xlog crash — a gift to the community that has kept on giving!

<embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=5431060&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=&fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="400" height="300"></embed>

Our ultrasn0w program uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector of our unlocking payload — and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G! But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband. So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.

Apple has recently pushed out its iPhone 3.1 software for developers, just about two weeks after the iPhone OS 3.0 released. And now, we are talking about the next generation of Apple device: iPhone 4.0. What?!

Image

Yes, that’s revealed based on recent Apple patent fillings. Some new patent applications include event-based modes, scheduled and intelligent communications.

Event-based modes: As shown by above picture, your iPhone 4.0 device could be able to automatically adapt to different locations and life events and reconfigure it’s settings – e.g. switch the sound off and turn on a voicemail when calendar shows that you are in the meeting.

Image

Scheduled communications: somewhat similar to the one above, but describes a way for you to automatically schedule/preset communications activities based on calendar events, your location, caller id and other conditions

Image

Intelligent communications: You can select appropriate communication modes for incoming communications requests based on a user’s preferences and availability. The device can determine the communication modes of a user based on the current activity and allow the user to provide customized information to his/her contacts.

Just to expand on that:

Yes, this is what you've all been waiting for. A jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it's awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click "make it ra1n". Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you'll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn't show up after running Freeze, reboot.

If you need help email purplera1n.support at gmail and attach your purplera1n.log file. Or call the purplera1n support hotline @ (650) 265-1210 Mac version is coming shortly.

Normally I don't make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the "last" hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it's just a matter of tools.

Props to chronic dev for their help, and to kroo for writing v2 of Freeze. And props to Saurik for making an awesome package set. Note the binary size of purplera1n, it's smaller than C++ hello world. No 20MB thing that needs to be torrented. And no IPSW to download. This is how jailbreak should be!

I finally got purplera1n to run successfully. I usually run xp64 and have driver compatibility issues when restoring and just use my friend's mac. I installed xp 32 on my secondary hd, along with iTunes 8.2

At first purple rain just crashed every time I clicked "make it ra1n" but resolved the issue via this thread:

Geohot wrote:i hardcoded C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Apple\\Mobile Device Support\\bin\\iTunesMobileDevice.dll

Once I copied the dll to the appropriate directory purplera1n ran without any issues. Cydia is now installed...just need to run Ultrasn0w and see if it unlocks.

EDIT: Confirmed...works with my bmobile sim. Keep in mind you'll get an bad source error when installing the ultrasn0w source on cydia/icy...just ignore this. When you search it will show up.

I just tried out Swirly on the 3G and it still works great.

Alright i got MMS working on the native app but it's messing with ultrasn0w and resetting the connection every time a message is recieved. The messages do send and receive fine though.

^ you have a 3G?

SRASC, using Mobileconfigs Genereator doesnt seem to do much more than put "mms" as the Cellular Data and MMS APN

I think most 2G owners will realise that unless you enter the same APN for both Cellular Data and MMS the settings will not stay for MMS (no mobileconfig required)

While some may get MMS to work with the "mms" APN however bmobile GPRS/EDGE customers must use "INTERNET" as their Cellular Data APN otherwise their GPRS/EDGE wont work and they wont be able to get email, check weather/stocks/maps/store etc or browse the net in safari

I am not on a corporate package and I still can't get the MMS to work :|

Yeah Duane its working on the 3G.

What i did first was install Swirly from the xsellize vip repo. When i installed Swirly it automatically picked up bmobile mms settings and proceeded to send and recieve mms messages.

After that i double checked the mms settings in cellular data network and eveyrthing was there, so i then went to the stock messages app and the little camera icon was there. I was able to successfully send and receive mms messages from the stock app after that with ultrasnow restarting itself (dev team is working on this).
