Two killed, one held, one wounded in police shootout
By Stacy Moore Sunday, May 26 2013
A 16-YEAR-OLD teenager and his friend who robbed a woman at gunpoint Friday afternoon in central Trinidad, were shot dead by police in a shootout at Carlsen Field, central Trinidad yesterday.
Dead is Tishawn Theon Miller, 16, of Circular Road, Crown Trace, Enterprise, and his accomplice, Devon Ferguson, 21, of Point Pleasant Road, Cunupia. They, along with two others, engaged a party of police officers in a gun battle at about 6 pm on Friday but were cut down by the lawmen.
According to a police report, at about 5.30 pm on Friday, a businesswoman was about to enter her home at Caparo Village, central Trinidad when a blue AD station wagon pulled up in front of her house. Four men, including Miller and Ferguson, held up the woman with one of them pointing a gun at her and demanding that she hand over a bag she was holding in her hand. After the men snatched the bag and was about to make good their escape, the woman began to scream. Neighbours responded and called the police.
Police reports state the bandits fired several shots in the direction of the woman which shattered the windscreen of her car parked in her driveway. She was not harmed, but police officers from Central Division responded to the robbery and under the supervision of ASP Johnny Abraham, an All Points Bulletin was issued to police stations in the surrounding districts. Sgts Mohammed, Thompson, Cpl Ali and other officers of the Central Division Tactical Unit and CID, spearheaded the chase.
The report stated police officers spotted the blue AD wagon in Carlsen Field, and a high-speed chase ensued between the lawmen and the occupants of the vehicle. Police said they were fired upon and during the shootout, the vehicle was blocked.
Upon checking the vehicle, the lawmen saw the injured men. Two other men, an 18-year-old teenager from Brasso Village in central Trinidad and a 21-year-old man from Freeport, were held when they attempted to escape from the AD wagon.
Miller and Ferguson were taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility, but were pronounced dead upon arrival.
The 18-year-old was discharged and taken into police custody while the 21-year-old was still warded up to yesterday with gunshot wounds, at San Fernando General Hospital. Police said they seized a .38 pistol with two live rounds of ammunition and a Smith and Wesson firearm with three rounds of ammunition were recovered.
Yesterday, when Sunday Newsday visited Miller’s family, his mother Patricia Miller, 52, said she last saw her son alive on Friday evening.
“He did not say where he was going, but a vehicle came and pick him up and he left. Then, I got a phone call later that he (Miller) was shot during some robbery,” Patricia said.
She said she did not see the vehicle that her son went into, nor did she know the others who were in the vehicle.
“My son is no saint. But he was no bandit either. He was not a person that would point a gun and rob someone, that is not Tishawn,” the crying mother said. Miller was not attending school and had dropped out of the Servol Learning Centre which was the last institution he attended, Patricia said. She said her son had started to follow “bad company”.
“I tried to talk to him, but he was influenced by the wrong set of people and he went astray very bad,” the woman said. Miller was the youngest of three siblings.
Patricia said her son should have been punished for his crime, but not by death. “He is only 16, he is a boy. They should have at least shot him on his leg or hand but not to kill him,” the woman told the Sunday Newsday.
Patricia said she saw the body of her son at the crime scene. “It is sad for a mother to watch the body of her 16 year old son on the ground with bullet holes,” Patricia said.
Autopsies on Miller’s and Ferguson’s bodies are expected to be performed at the Forensic Science Centre tomorrow. Investigations are continuing.
