Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
On the contrary, the Godly probably suffers more.

Only last Monday, for example, a professor emeritus named Theodore Lewis explained in an Express column how to stop murders: all the authorities have to do is ensure that young black men are taught about their African ancestry and get licks from the neighbours. Prof Lewis knows these solutions work because in his childhood he was “guaranteed a cut-tail” in his community which, along with the Black Power protests in the 1970s that “altered the mindset of my generation for the better”, explains how he turned out strong yet absorbent. Thus, once young black men learn to beat drums and worship Ogun, they won’t be killing one another over URP monies or drug turf or gold teeth. After all, look how peaceful and prosperous African societies have always been.
In that same Monday Express, solutions to corruption were also presented by UNC hack Capil Bissoon and never-badtalk-the-PNM columnist Keith Subero. Both, in different ways, argued that corruption could be solved by accepting corruption. According to Bissoon, corruption “occurs at all levels” and “has been embedded in our DNA”. So when the People’s National Movement accuses the United National Congress of corruption, Bissoon wrote, “it appears to be a case of pot calling kettle black.” In other words, while the PNM is black-hearted, the UNC is only run by blackguards who needn’t learn the shango.
Similarly, Subero in his column argued that T&T has benefited socially from its energy revenues, hence solving the problem of the resource curse in 734 words. But his main purpose was to praise Dr Ken Julien, who gave this country gas while avoiding flatulence. This echoes a statement made by PNM leader Keith Rowley, who once asserted that “This country owes Prof Julien a debt of gratitude”, because apparently the fact that Julien became a multi-millionaire from being T&T’s energy czar was not payback enough.
So, according to Subero, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan should not be suing Prof Julien for mismanagement at e-Teck and the UTT because Ramlogan hasn’t also sued Environment Minister Ganga Singh for mismanagement at WASA. In other words, you can stop corruption by ensuring that, if all wrong-doing isn’t prosecuted, no wrong-doing is. And so, writes Subero, “every T&T citizen should say a quiet prayer for the late Prime Minister Dr Eric Williams and for Prof Ken Julien, every day.”
This, of course, is the ultimate solution for all the country’s woes. Several times a year religious groups pray to stop murders, floods and homosexuality. Yet some men continue to have sex with one another, hence causing homicide and heavy rains. Which, according to artist Leroy Clarke, means that gays are especially numerous in Laventille and Mayaro. Parliament even starts every session with a prayer, yet Government ministers still manipulate tenders for multi-million-dollar projects; State board members still award contracts worth $499,999 to companies run by themselves; and the President remains silent on whether he asked for a housing allowance for himself, housing for his aide, and a house dress for his wife.
How can this be? It cannot be that prayer doesn’t work, because only atheists believe that and, as Subero and the Constitution suggest, non-believers are not citizens of T&T. So, if God is not answering all these prayers from all these religious leaders, it must be because the people aren’t following all God’s rules: like killing disobedient children; beating lustful women; and not eating shrimp, pork or beef.
Ergo, since we do in fact kill children and beat women, the real solution to all our problems is obvious: ban Chinese restaurants.
