A POLICE corporal with 20 years’ service was shot dead during a robbery attempt in Woodbrook early yesterday morning.
But just before he died, the off-duty policeman managed to squeeze off a few rounds, killing one of the two bandits who attacked him.
The murder toll stood at 164 up to last night.
Corporal Curtis Simon Clapham, 47, worked as the driver/bodyguard for one-time Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs and Ag CoP Stephen Williams, who is currently out of the country.
Police said sometime after midnight, Clapham stopped his Nissan Navarra along Roberts Street, Woodbrook, between Murray and French streets. He was reportedly assisting two members of the public when two bandits approached the van.
One drew a pistol and announced a hold-up, but Clapham reacted quickly and drew his service pistol.
One of the bandits realised what was going on and fired several shots at Clapham, who fired back at one of the bandits, hitting him multiple times about his body. He was identified yesterday as Mikhail Stone of Tumpuna Road, Arima.
The other bandit left his injured accomplice, took Clapham’s service pistol and ran towards a getaway car located nearby and sped off.
Firemen on duty at Woodbrook Fire Station walked across to where the incident occurred, but Clapham was already dead, along with Stone.
Officers of Woodbrook Police Station, which was also close by, were called in and an all-points-bulletin was issued for the whereabouts of the getaway vehicle.
Almost an hour later, the car was spotted along Lady Young Road, Morvant by officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force and was chased to St Francois Valley Road, Belmont.
The driver was arrested and although he was not identified as one of the bandits who shot Clapham, police said he will be very helpful in locating that man.
Clapham’s body was moved to the Port of Spain Mortuary and by early yesterday morning word began spreading throughout the Police Service that a third policeman had been murdered for the year.
It was not received well by fellow officers as many Facebook and Blackberry Messenger profiles reflected their angry mood over what happened.
One Blackberry Messenger status was: “allyuh see what we does have to go through on a daily basis eh!.”
At Clapham’s Boxill Trace, Laventille home, his relatives mourned his passing. He was the father of two sons and described by relatives as an almost fanatical motorbike enthusiast.
“He loved his family, his life and motorbike riding,” said a female relative who did not want her name used.
Visiting the family was National Security Minister Emmanuel George and Deputy Commissioner Mervyn Richardson, who denied there was a plot amid Trinidad and Tobago’s underworld to target and murder police officers.
“I have no evidence to suggest or make me believe that there is any plot to murder police officers,” said Richardson.
Investigations are continuing.

Two men were killed in a shootout with police yesterday after a reported carjacking and high-speed daylight chase. Dead are Kareem Stewart, of Racecourse Road, Carapo, and Keyon Guy, of Arima, both of whom are known to the police, according to Superintendent Johnny Abraham.
He said the men were killed after a crime spree which began Tuesday around 9 pm, when four armed men stole a black Nissan Navara in the St Margaret’s area. The four reportedly proceeded to Arima where, early yesterday morning, they stole a brown Toyota Hilux from a family. An all-points bulletin was issued and the Navara was spotted hours later along Todd’s Road, travelling towards Caparo.
Police from the Central Division and the Northern Division combined and tracked down the vehicle, then engaged in a high-speed chase on Todd’s Road when the driver tried to get away. The Navara eventually crashed into a ditch off the side of the road. Two men came out of the vehicle and shot at police before escaping on foot, officers said. Not long after, the other two men who were in the Hilux also crashed about quarter-of-a-mile from where the Navara ran off the road.
Police said they later spotted the two men from the Hilux in a white Nissan AD station wagon and pursued them. According to police, the men came out the vehicle and fired at them. The police returned fire and wounded the men whom they then took to the Chaguanas Health Centre where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Police recovered a shotgun, a 9mm pistol and several rounds of ammunition. The search for the escaped pair is continuing.
