JUST HOURS after Government announced the implementation of measures to stymie the carnage on the nation’s roads through the use of speed guns, two men lost their lives in fatal crashes.
Avynash Bhagaloo, 29, of Rio Claro, and Anthony Ramsawaksingh, 56, of Gran Couva, died in separate crashes along the Uriah Butler Highway between Friday night and yesterday morning.
Bhagaloo was a demonstrator at the University of The West Indies in St Augustine who was months away from completing his doctorate.
Ramsawaksingh was a police officer on pre-retirement leave who was never previously involved in a vehicular crash.
Both men, according to witnesses, were driving when they skidded and crashed into separate lamp poles.

Fatal speed
TT Newsday

By Cecily Asson Sunday, May 1 2016

Two men, one of them a policeman, died in separate accidents overnight Friday, even as speed guns to track down speeding drivers are due to take effect from tomorrow.

“Eighty kilometres per hour (kph) does not do that kind of damage and I spoke to officers on the scene (accident) who said that type of impact, was definitely because of speed,” a concerned co-ordinator of the Police Road Safety Project PC Brent Batson said in response to the deaths of PC Anthony Ramsawacksingh, 54, and 29-year-old Avinash Balgobin.

The deaths of Ramsawacksingh, of Pepper Village, Gran Couva and Balgobin, of Navet Road, Rio Claro occurred less than three hours apart raising the road fatality rate to 50. In both cases the drivers crashed into poles along the Uriah and Solomon Hochoy Highways.

In the first incident, police reported that at about 11.30 pm on Friday, Ramsawacksingh was proceeding north on the Uriah Butler Highway, Chaguanas when upon reaching the vicinity of the Divali Nagar site, his car veered off the road and crashed into a light pole.

He died instantly.

Three other occupants were injured and were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Then, at about 2.15 am yesterday, Balgobin was driving a silver Nissan Cefiro north on the Solomon Hochoy Highway, when near the Hindu Credit Union, he ran off the road and slammed into a concrete pole causing it to break into three pieces.

He too died instantly.

Their horrific deaths occurred a few hours after Minister of Works and Transport Fitzgerald Hinds announced the introduction of speed guns which will be used by police officers, from tomorrow, to measure the speed of moving vehicles. “It is disheartening to know that after the announcement made by the Minister of Works and Transport with regards to the deployment of speed guns in the hands of police, that drivers continue to exercise reckless behaviour on the road which ultimately leads to either injury or death to themselves or others,” Batson told Sunday Newsday.

“The two road traffic accidents that occurred hours after this announcement indicates a high level of irresponsible and in some cases reckless use of the roadways.

“Drivers need to understand that the laws are there to protect them and the only way we can improve on road safety, is if, we as road users begin to internalise practices of self discipline and more importantly safety when it comes to road use.” Batson said he feels there is a disconnect between the road safety message and how persons assess the way they drive.

“Because they believe is other people who drive recklessly and don’t realise that they are part of the problem,” Batson went on to say.

“There is the consequence and these accidents are preventable,” he added in reference to the tragedy.

really... to make that statement as fact is somewhat foolish... what of factors such as vehicular structural integrity per body type, crash dynamics, etc?

can't simply pin it on the fact that 80 won't do that kinda damage...

Won't most, if not all impacts, be because to speed?
I'm more concerned about why the driver lost control.

Even without the drill pipe and at 65km/h it would crush that car.

Everyone is quick to judge the police but common sense suggests that travelling at 80 you would not breach one barrier cross a median breach another barrier travel across another lane hit a truck and then bounce back into the median. It's not an argument for or against the speed limit. It's just common sense.
