Today is the day soca superstar Machel Montano is expected to learn his fate, when he and songwriter Kernal Roberts appear before Magistrate Maureen Baboolal-Gafoor for sentencing at the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court.
The men were supposed to be sentenced on January 17—at the height of the Carnival season—but his hearing was adjourned, leaving Montano free to continue headlining several Carnival fetes, including his eponymous Machel Monday concert.
On December 10 last year, the reigning Groovy Soca Monarch and co-Power Soca Monarch (with Austin "SuperBlue" Lyons) was found guilty by Baboolal-Gafoor of assaulting Brandis Browne, Russell Pollonais, Janelle Lee Chee and Gerard Bowrin, and using obscene language outside the Zen nightclub in Port of Spain on the morning of April 26, 2007.
Roberts was found guilty of assaulting Pollonais and Browne.
Two other entertainters—Joel "Zan" Feveck and Rodney "Benjai" LeBlanc—had also been charged alongside Montano and Roberts, but they were both found not guilty of the charges.
Last week, the Sunday Express exclusively reported Montano's public apology to his victims.
The matter is scheduled to be called at 9 a.m.
