AN attempted robbery along McCarthy Street in St Augustine yesterday morning led police officers chasing two bandits through the compound of the Lakshmi Girls' Hindu College, causing the principal to temporarily shut the school down.

Several parents called the Express newsroom yesterday saying they were concerned about the safety of their daughters after they received information that two gunmen had entered the school.

But according to officers at the St Joseph Police Station, the men were never armed.

A police source said that between 10.30 and 11 a.m., they received reports about someone being robbed by three men along McCarthy Street, which is west of the school.

The officer said the police quickly responded, and upon seeing the officers the three men ran away empty-handed.

Two of them the officer said, jumped several fences before entering the school's compound.

One was arrested and taken to the Tunapuna Police Station for questioning, while the other two escaped, police said.
