Yea ABA true, I'm a Trinidadian and opened a US bank account that is affiliated with the Bank of Freedom. I opened a merchant US paypal account that I integrate to accept credit card payments on my websites. Only credit card payments since not much locals know about paypal. Within a matter of three weeks I got a Bank of Freedom Visa debit card. As an address on Paypal's registration, I used my Skybox address :). Sad thing is, If paypal were to allow Trinidadians all features like US residents, cuz I see that Jamaicans now have full features, you can't change your country information.

But I did all this since I was 17 so I dunno how it is now :|. Plus the sites that had the paypal integration are no longer in operation. I now use other methods to accept payment. Oh yea, an Online payment system is coming to Trinidad. Wait for it :)

Edit: I jus logged into the account after like a year or so and saw that I am not verified anymore for some reason :(..... $0.65 in my account

I jus read your last post. I didn't do anything but use my dad's credit card back in the day. No friends in the US nor did I have to go across there to open an account. I was desperate and came across a site where you sign up and get your account and login details etc.... I don't know if its still in operation cuz I jus logged into my account and saw that I'm now unverified, but I know they were affiliated with http://www.bankfreedom.com

I got a visa debit card in he mail from them, some bank account and login details via email and in the mail. Used that info along with my skybox address to set up my paypal. Aeroposts address didn't work though. It says no "P.O. box etc", So I used another skybox address we had. I used my dad's credit card to add funds to the account and a check to withdraw.

Just looking into paypal once more an their API after a year or so since I may have uses for it soon to come.

They aren't in operation anymore. Think I mentioned that in the same post. All payments received were credit card payments. Locals didn't really know about paypal back then. Had a next site name alertpay. Don't know if they better than paypal now. Also google checkout now started back then. If I'm going to integrate, I think paypal would be the least of options if theres better...... Don't know if their fees got worse, Plus they put a hold on my account many times.

Remember when to purchase off of Ebay you had to have a paypal account. Is it still so?

paypal is the preferred method of payment for almost all sellers on ebay.

few sellers use other methods

googlecheckout was great but many sellers stopped using them and replaced their shopping carts with paypal payments...googlecheckout use to take payments from any credit card anywhere in the world

There are 3 main options I've come across thus far, for TT based businesses doing e-commerce:

1. AlertPay -https://www.alertpay.com/en/Default.aspx

From my dealings with AlertPay, they are very good. Great customer service (you get your questions answered faster if you post on their FB Wall. The service operates in a similar fashion as Paypal (i.e its an e-Wallet). They act as a 3rd-party Merchant

Pros: Good for e-commerce and SaaS based applications
Cons: Smaller than paypal but growing very quickly.
Good For Sales under US$10,000/mth

2. 2Checkout - http://www.2checkout.com/

I personally know many TT companies who use 2CO. Their service is mediocre to good.

Pros: Good for e-commerce and SaaS based applications
Cons: They act as a reseller. So you account may become frozen if they find you selling certain prohibited brandnames (eg. Disney, Victoria Secret etc.). Google and check out their prohibited list.
Good For Sales under US$5,000/mth

3. CheddarGetter - https://cheddargetter.com/

I personally had dealings with them. Their customer service is Excellent. Their platform is Excellent. Everything about them is Excellent. They act as a service which sit's on top of your Merchant Account. Being a TT Company they will set you up with one of their Merchant Partners who focus on high-risk international companies, so you get your own Merchant Account.

Pros: Good for SaaS based applications. Great if you're building say the next Freshbooks etc. (Check out CG's feature list)
Cons: Only good for SaaS based applications, so you won't be able to use them if you doing traditional 1-off e-commerce sales.
Good For Sales over US$7,000/mth

NB: All of the 3 mentioned above allow withdrawals to TT via Check, WireTransfer, and Debit Cards in some cases (2CO and AP)

On GoogleCheckout and Paypal - don't bother. Google requires your business be incorporated in the US. Paypal does not allow withdrawals to TT. It should be noted for risk mitigation, do not, I repeat do not, use Paypal if your sales exceed $3000 US per month. They are an e-Wallet, not a Merchant Account.

And finally, if you want that good old fashion 3rd World feel, with Good Ol' Fashion 3rd World Customer Service, there's always Scotia. No need say more on them. You can give them a call to get the true Experience.

Hope this helps in your decision.
PS: As with all things money, email/contact the companies and make sure you're happy/they fit your needs.
