The trailer seems to indicate an alternate universe where the ultimate quest for justice and order has lead Superman to not seeing that he has become evil. Alternate because it seems to be far in the future or another universe where technology has advanced in a short time since Batman isn't that old.

They covered this in the Justice League D.C. Animation series when Superman decided to kill Lex. Only the Batman of that alt. universe could have stopped what they eventually became.
