Y'all saw the email?
It's from Harare@beeble.com - which is a Latvian email provider. The language suggests that English is not their first language. Might just be someone discovered an email list for some schools and just decided that today was a good day for chaos.

Yes. For obvious purposes such as terrorism or other cybercrime, legal entities can request data via subpoena. If it's an international threat different layers can be unravelled via ISP/service provider logs and a forensic investigation team can triangulate the data to people/locations.

These things aint as fool proof as you think.

It's difficult to track, but not impossible. Unless a man really hide his sheit

But this sound like a prank, so they might be able to find them if NatSec aint hire somebody with basic IT skills but someone who specializes in ethical hacking/cyber security etc

Simply behind behind multiple VPNs from stolen credit cards on public WiFi and using a Latvian email provider makes it much more difficult.

but not in time to stop the threat if it was real tho. only in time to arrest them - and still they cud use public wifi with vpns- once no actual bombs are found cybercrime go get fedup and go back to spying on kamla and opposition members.

Exactly.

VPN may/may not cover your tracks and hard to tell if 100% untraceable. Many VPNs boast guaranteed privacy/no logs etc, but all that could suddenly change in an investigation. Bear in mind that the sender could also be in another country which makes it even harder for foreign authorities to cooperate with our oh so efficient locals.

So yes, new cell phone, unreg sim, public wifi is almost untraceable.

The only way to be caught is through camera footage but again, impossible in a heavily populated area.

Btw emails can also be set to auto send at a later date/time.

It is traceable. There is nowhere anyone is hiding with an electronic communications device today. Even regular landline telephone works through VoIP now on the internet. There will be a network connection. The local authority has the hardware and software available to track everything, it's not a civilian thing. VPN is not something that cannot be figured out with time. Even the tor network, the US government runs most of the nodes for this very reason.

So let's see what they will say about where this originated. Or if they will just lie how they don't know.

Also despite what they claim, I'm pretty sure governments can access whatsapp and other communications, decrypt and scan for threat words. Didn't the US government do that for Intel on the Jan 6th coup attempt? Don't we have Israel surveillance hardware and a national security center doing all this? They can trace past movement from the moment a Sim card or whatever is activated.
