China is having a serious problem with the disposable of the lead acid batteries .

It is a vicious cycle - trying to save the environment by moving away from fossil yet
creating another problem with the batteries .

CNG is a better solution .

It'd be good to have a directory of legit places for battery reconditioning/mtce

From the budget statement:
I propose to remove all incentives currently available to passenger vehicles with engine sizes exceeding 1599cc. The incentives will only now apply to CNG and hybrid vehicles with engines less than 1599cc.

Some of these hybrids like the Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Niro, Honda Vezel and Toyota PriusC have engine sizes below 1599cc so they should still not attract any taxes.

As ironic as it is, BMW i8 should be exempt also?

So what sort of taxes are involved with vehicles such as these? Any v.a.t, m.v.t or custom duty? Which taxes still apply if any?

Seen

So if a car engine is 1580cc, legally that is listed at as 1.6 engine meaning tax? Or does that fall below the 1599cc etc. Honest question

1.6 is just an approximation based on the cc. All manufacturers do this. 1.6L can be a 1551cc vehicle go all the way up to 1649cc. So a 1.6 car with a cc rating of 1649cc WILL get the tax and one at 1580cc using your example can fall under.

Oh that's good...I know that engine size determines the tax etc so I just wanted to know if Customs use an approximation (1651cc = 1.7) etc when calculating or if they used the exact engine size. I gather that you are saying they use the exact engine size which is fair to me.

serena "hybrid" is not recognized as a tax exempted hybrid (micro hybrid) by customs

since the beginning of 2017 any serena entering trini has been subject to full duty & taxes

What they needed to do was take the hard decision to exempt non luxary hybrid vehicles from taxes and increase the mvt on new/foreign used vehicles above 1.5 or 1.3 depends on how drastic they wanna get to incentivise the.population to buy hybrids. It would also go downstream to the mechanics, electricians to elevate their knowledge to repair/maintain these vehicles (similar to how they evolved from repairing carburator to fuel injectors way back when) is not like gas vehicles going anywhere they just evolving how efficiently the fuel is used. Also bamboo might start importting parts and replacement parts might normalise after a while. But they only studying how to get instant money no 5 year or 10 year plan.

Said forward thinking nations don't import 100% of their vehicles which depletes said nations foreign exchange. I hate the tax as much as anybody else but the foreign used dealers exploited this loophole of this law that Imbert idiotically didn't think through

Very interesting. I did not know this so thanks for sharing.

So guys check this out:

TTTL only brought in the Prius C 1.5 and Prius 1.8. The price of the C was $272k and $257k but after the tax concessions the price was reduced to $205k where an additional discount was being offered and thus reducing the price to an all time low @ $196k. Currently I am told the C is now $215k. So it went back up a bit probably due to forex?

Now onto the Prius 1.8. This car was $410k but after the tax concessions it went down to $310k with a further discount reducing it to $285k. Now that this Prius is once again subject to tax, I am assuming that TTTL will increase the price probably above the $410k to maybe $430k minimum (knowing them).

So the company that created the Hybrid vehicle to begin with will only be able to sell the Prius C for $215k. Now why would anyone purchase this baby Prius brand new when the Hyundai Ioniq 1.6 starts at $185k ?

Once again, the roro dealers who bring in the Axio and Fielder Hybrids as well as the Aqua, Vezel and Fit are going to make a lot of money selling these cars because of the awesome price-point vs the limited brand new options available to us.

As was mentioned in the Aqua thread, right now that car (a 2014 model) can be brought down to T&T fully licensed and ready to drive for much less than $60k. (cheaper than a Latio, Note or AD Van). A 4-year old virtually maintenance free vehicle that quite possibly could be the most fuel efficient vehicle in T&T.

Perhaps this is what the Honourable Minister of Finance wants us to drive?

I'd like to disagree. While the IONIQ is obviously a very popular vehicle in Trinidad, one can only fathom the size of the dent in the local dealers' sales when one can add a few thousand dollars to the down payment they'd make in Massy for said IONIQ and bring in their own vehicle, so putting the desire for the new car smell and the difficulty to obtain ForEx aside, bringing in a RoRo hybrid is far more lucrative than facing the local dealer even when comparing apples and apples, with a RoRo X-Trail (which can be had brand new, with many more features than ita local counterpart) and said local offering. Not being a conspiracy theorist, but I really don't think it's 'guava season' that made them remove the concessions on vehicles that may or may not compete with the IONIQ. If it was in fact guava season, that inspired that move, the first thing that should have been put on pause was the tax breaks they (politicians etc) get on their vehicles and well, we know how that discussion went.

Sounds interesting. Is a smaller car also, so it has to be priced competitively

Looking forward to more info on that. I think that the price will be 140-150k range seeing as the msrp is 20-22k usd based on Toyota US. The 2018 prius c looks very much like the ford fiesta.
