Report: Apple iPod 'Grandfather' To Step Down

Postby SRASC » November 4th, 2008, 10:19 am

Tony Fadell, largely regarded as the grandfather of the iPod and Apple's audio strategy, is leaving the company for personal reasons, according to a report published Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal.

Apple declined to comment on the story, but the financial paper cited people familiar with the matter as saying the executive will be replaced by Mark Papermaster, a top chip designer recently recruited from IBM among much controversy.

Fadell joined Apple as the first member of its iPod hardware engineering team in 2001 and was promoted to vice president of iPod engineering in 2004. He's served as the senior vice president of Apple's iPod division since April 2006.

Back in the 1990s, Fadell started a company called Fuse, which aimed to produce a new array of consumer electronics devices for the masses. One such product was a hard disk-based digital music player.

When Fuse ran out of funding, Fadell explored the possibility of developing his gadgets for another company. He initially joined RealNetworks in 2000, but left just six weeks later. The next company he approached was Apple.

While presiding over the iPod boom, Fadell was also instrumental in the development of the first iPhone and oversaw other smaller products during his tenure at the company, including the iSight.

Fadell's big break came on October 14, 2005, when Apple announced that he would replace the retiring Jon Rubinstein as Senior Vice President of the iPod Division.

Fadell has filed more than 20 patents for his work, several of which have been covered

According to the Journal, Fadell plans to take time off after leaving Apple but may still keep a role at the company as a consultant.

iPhone 2.2 screenshots reveal direct podcast downloads

Postby SRASC » November 6th, 2008, 12:16 pm

A series of screenshots from Apple's latest iPhone 2.2 beta have leaked on the web, revealing a new interface for downloading podcasts over wireless networks and a more polished version of the handset's App Store application.

Direct Podcast Downloads

The screenshots, published by the German-langue blog Flo's Weblog, appear to confirm reports that the next software update for the iPhone will allow users to grab podcasts from the mobile iTunes Store over the handset's 3G connection.

A report published late last month had suggested this would be the case, but the feature was said to be non-functional at the time. The series of screenshots, republished below, reveals the interface flow for direct podcast downloads.

According to the report, Apple will initially limit direct downloads to podcasts 10MB in size or less. It's unclear, however, whether the feature will be restricted to iPhones on a 3G connection or if downloads can also be performed over an EDGE network.

Image

App Store Categories

In addition, the same report tosses in a screen captures that reveals upcoming interface change to the App Store application that's expected to ship as part of iPhone Software 2.2.

The change, first detailed by AppleInsider back in September, is rather uneventful, consisting of a new categories home page that will feature large category icons and more generous spacing between each listing, rather than just narrow textual category representations.

Unlike builds of the software available in September, the latest betas reveal the new icons Apple may have chosen to use for its category listing (though they appear to be icons for third-party Apps at present).

Image

So since 2.2 has been development some of the features leaked have been:

Safari interface tweaks with relocated Google search

New App Store app with new categories interface, and "report a problem" feature

Auto-correction toggle and Japanese Emoji icons

Google Street View, transit and walking directions

    Direct podcast downloads

______
& on a side note...

iPhone: Now The Most Purchased Phone

Postby SRASC » November 10th, 2008, 1:08 pm

According to The NPD Group, Apple's iPhone 3G surpassed the top-ranked Motorola RAZR as the leading handset purchased by adult consumers* in the U.S. in the third quarter (Q3) of 2008. RAZR had been ranked by NPD as the top-selling consumer handset for the past 12 quarters.

Even with stronger consumer sales of iPhone, and the mobile phone market's normal seasonal uplift after Q2, domestic handset purchases by adult consumers declined 15 percent year over year in Q3 to 32 million units. Consumer handset sales revenue fell 10 percent to $2.9 billion, even as the average selling price (ASP) rose 6 percent to $88.

"The displacement of the RAZR by the iPhone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality," said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD. "Four of the five best-selling handsets in the third quarter were optimized for messaging and other advanced Internet features."

Image

The top handset models in rank order, based on unit sales in Q3, were as follows:
1. Apple iPhone 3G
Image
2. Motorola RAZR V3 (all models)
Image
3. RIM Blackberry Curve (all models)
Image
4. LG Rumor
Image
5. LG enV2
Image

Popular Features:
When it comes to the specific features that motivated U.S. consumers to purchase, 43 percent of handset buyers cited the need for a camera and 36 percent noted the ability to send and receive text messages. Mobile phones with a QWERTY keyboard experienced the greatest year-over-year rise in sales; 30 percent of handsets were sold with this feature in Q3 2008, versus just 11 percent the year prior. Also this quarter 83 percent of phones purchased were Bluetooth enabled (versus 72 percent last year), and nearly seven in 10 (68 percent) of phones purchased in Q3 were music enabled (versus 49 percent last year).

"A growing data divide continues in cellular handsets," Rubin said. "Those who see the value in wireless Internet access are justifying the investment, whereas voice-centric users have little incentive to upgrade, which is obviously detrimental to operators who seek to sell data plans and media access services to their subscribers."

Methodology: NPD compiles and analyzes mobile device sales data based on more than 150,000 completed online consumer research surveys each month. Surveys are based on a nationally balanced and demographically representative sample of U.S. adults. Results are projected to represent the entire population of U.S. consumers age 18 and older.

Oakley and Surfline Create iPhone App

Postby SRASC » November 10th, 2008, 4:23 pm

Oakley, Inc. and Surfline today announced the release of an Apple iPhone application that provides worldwide mobile access to surf reports. Developed by Oakley in conjunction with Surfline, the application utilizes a media rich format to present real-time information from Surfline, the leading provider of surf reports, forecasts and editorial content on the sport.

Pro surfers have responded favorably to the new application. In the words of Sebastian Zietz, Oakley global surf team member, "It's 'sick' being able to check the waves without having to turn on a computer. No matter where I go, I always know how the waves are."

"Surfline is excited to launch the first mobile iPhone surf report application with Oakley who shares our passion for surfing and creating the best products available in the marketplace," said Brian J. Mezger, director of technology, Surfline.

The initial release of the free downloadable mobile iPhone application will provide continually updated information on surf and weather conditions, as well as information on the surf community and culture including news, photos and videos.

Users can bookmark their favorite beaches or find locations by city, state, zip code, name or region. Additional information includes surf conditions, weather, safety notices and reports. General weather forecasts are available, along with projected surf conditions for the following three days. Directions to beaches are available via convenient map links. A separate screen offers news and information on surfing events, videos optimized for the iPhone from Surfline, as well as imagery on the sport and biographies of Oakley team riders.

To download the free application, owners of an iPhone (or iPod(R) touch) running iPhone OS 2.1 or later can simply open the "App Store" application. On a computer, users can open iTunes(R) and download the application through the "Music Store" section. Direct links are available at http://www.oakley.com/SurfReport, and http://www.surfline.com/iphone.

MySMS

Postby SRASC » November 13th, 2008, 10:01 am

So I believe there are a few of you out there wanting such things like landscape texting, ability to send msg's to multiple contacts at once, erasing single messages, disabling the annoying auto-correct and security to name a few.

And you say all of this plus more in one single app?

Well, now there is Introducing MySMS from iSoft!

You can download a demo version from Cydia (BigBoss Repo) now

Or check it out on their website iSoft - iPhone software (iModem)

I also would recommend Shazam.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Xy1jGtHy7AE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed>

It was recently featured in one of the iPhone 3G ads. It identifies songs. Simply hold the iPhone/iPod touch to a song source (speakers) while playing & Shazam will recognize it. Best part, its FREE.

Could get apps from the app store on any 2.0 or > iPhone. Could also access the app store in iTunes as well via the iTunes store. And lastly you could use Installer and or Cydia on a jailbroken iPhone as well. In terms of sites, you used to be able to do that but Apple is shutting those down a lot lately. In fact yesterday I believe The Monkey's Ball was shut down it being perhaps one of the bigger sites to offer free [cracked] versions of app store apps.

Adobe Bringing Flash; Google Brings Voice Search | To iPhone

Postby SRASC » November 18th, 2008, 7:43 am

Adobe has pledged to optimize a version of Flash 10 for smartphones using ARM processors like those of the iPhone -- but iPhone itself isn't getting that upgrade. Also, flash memory maker Spansion has implicated Apple in lawsuits against Samsung that could block the import of iPods.

Adobe shows Flash 10 on ARM smartphone chips

Image

At the start of its Max conference for developers, Adobe on Monday demonstrated Flash 10 for ARM processors as well as a similarly mobile port of AIR, or its container for stand-alone Flash apps.

The technology is due in the second half of 2009 and will give smartphones and home electronics based on ARM11 series chips features closer to full desktop-level Flash through a mix of optimizations and the hardware graphics acceleration of newer devices.

But while the new code is cross-platform and would work on iPhone's ARM1176 processor, Adobe notably demonstrated on Google's Android, Microsoft's Windows Mobile, and Symbian -- not Apple's hardware.

According to Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch, the continued absence of Flash on the iPhone now has less to do with technical barriers and more with Apple's opinion of whether the animation software is worth the effort.

"This needs a little more baking. We need to pass the taste test of Apple's head chef," the official says, referring to the iPhone maker's Steve Jobs.

Apple's co-founder has been openly critical of Flash as it exists on mobile devices. While Flash Lite already exists for cellphones, it doesn't support the plugins user expect. Conversely, desktop-ready Flash is full-featured but, until now, too stressful for iPhones and most other smartphones to handle

The new Google Mobile iPhone App with Voice-Recognition is now available through the AppStore, according to LifeHacker.

The search-by-voice iPhone app we heard about on Friday may not have shown up as planned, but it is now available from the iTunes App Store. The iTunes page itself doesn't show the app as updated, but download and sync it anyway, and you'll notice a shiny new Google Mobile on your iPhone complete with voice-recognition.

no crashes - everything happened seamlessly

I backed up with iTunes - back up, not sync.
I also use outlook daily so all my contacts, calendar, messages etc etc are saved anyhow.
SO when I upgrade and resync I dont lose anything

USB 3.0 Specs. Announced & another iPhone Flash Story

Postby SRASC » November 19th, 2008, 9:19 am

Ok, I know, its not iPhone related (directly anyway) but the final specs for USB 3.0 are out.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group today announced the completion of the USB 3.0 specification, the technical map for device manufacturers to deliver SuperSpeed USB technology to the market.

SuperSpeed USB brings significant power and performance enhancements to the popular USB standard while offering backward compatibility with billions of USB-enabled PCs and peripheral devices currently in use by consumers. Delivering data transfer rates up to ten times faster than Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) with optimized power efficiency, SuperSpeed USB is the next step in the continued evolution of USB technology.

“SuperSpeed USB is the next advancement in ubiquitous technology,â€
