Tobago Blue Food Festival 2014 ~ Dasheen

Tobago Blue Food Festival 2014, hosted by the Tobago House of Assembly, kicked off its 16th year celebrating the one and only Blue Food - "Dasheen"

With their usual amazing creativity, participants eagerly offered their Dasheen dishes for display and sale.

Dasheen Wine, Dasheen Punch and Dasheen Ice Cream were the popular items purchased to help cool the heat. Dasheen Margaritas from the THI also drew a crowd.

Dasheen Jam, Preserved Dasheen, Dasheen Anchar were some of the interesting creations that caught our eye

Most Creative Dasheen Dish, and Best Dasheen Dessert.

For the sweet tooth, aside from the Ice Cream, there was a multitude of baked goods and sweets such as Dasheen Pone, Dasheen Black Cake, Dasheen Cup Cakes and Dasheen Chocolate Chip Cookies

(I wouldnt think of making these things with Dasheen)

Local Market ~San Antonio Green Market ~ Stories

WHERE YOUR FOOD COMES FROM

THE GREEN MARKET FARM

Do you know the Market is also a five-acre farm? From the Market, you can follow Passion Fruit Trellises to the Guava Orchards where children can swing and ride in a small playground. The herb gardens feature flavor and Medicinal Herbs.

There is a small food forest with Soursop, Jackfruit, Jamoon, Shaddock. Your walk will lead you to a Pond with Waterlilies.

In the poultry enclosure, you’ll see Guinea Fowl, Ducks and Chickens. The free range eggs are laid by the Chickens that roost under the Avocado Trees; they are allowed to forage outside their open air coop daily. We have a small batch of young chicks that have been raised from a few days old. It takes a hen five or six months to maturity and its first egg, by January production of farm eggs should be expanded.

The farm is working towards a more Organic Diet for the poultry. If you would like to divert fresh Vegetable Peelings and Remnants, you can let us know, and you can help feed the chickens too!

Farm visits may be arranged for school or community groups; young children are especially welcome. Under the guidance of Wendell Mottley, you'll find Rheanna, Randall and Sherece on the farm, and in the SAGM stall at the market.

PETER ALEXANDER

Peter Alexander sells Fresh Bhaji, Roots, Melongene and Dodi in the Green Market. He and his family live ona steep hill at the very end of La Canoa, Santa Cruz, about 10 minutes away from the Green Market. Historically, it was a Spanish land grant in the 18th-19th developed into cash crop plantations.

Instead of Coffee and Cacao, today we see members of the Solanaceae family (Tomato, Eggplant,Peppers) also known as Nightshades, cultivated by Peter and his daughter, Ammelia. On the other side of the land is his brother, Patson.

Early in the morning, Petergoes to the fields with his cutlass. Pausing, he enjoys his favourite Pommegranate Infused Water and a cool breeze from the hilltops. By 10:30am, the sun hits his fields directly.

This hillside is ideal for Tomato and Pepper Production. Peter is experimenting with Organic Eggplants and gets seedlings from the Hare Krishna center in Trinidad. His younger brother leads the Pepper Production.

Growing food for the Green Market is not without its challenges. In the rainy season, the weeds have gone wild. Peter deals with the rampant wild growth by cutting the bush in small areas and burning it, using the ashes to fertilize the soil. The challenge in the pepper fields are spider mites for which a sustainable solution is being sought.

GLEN AND AMIR

Amir and Glen are innovative Agri-Designers working in busy Chaguanas. Follow a strip of Chinese Restaurants and Hardware Stores, pass a few side streets and you arrive at an impressive shade house.

This is a structure with a metal frame that supports shade cloth - a screen that provides passive environmental control. They grow Tomatoes on raised Wooden Trellises. They give the frame a simple shake to help the pollination process and thus, yield more fruit. It is watered by a drip irrigation system running from a main pump. Drip is the most effective method of watering. It is more than 90% efficient at allowing plants to use the water applied, directly and slowly at the plant root zone where it is needed. Drip reduces runoff and evaporation.

Sprinkler systems are estimated to be 65-75% efficient. Shade houses are great in the tropics: although there is a high startup cost, famers have better control over pests, extreme weather conditions like drought or heavy rainfall. Amir is the engineer when it comes to figuring out mechanisms that produce high quality produce with good yields. Outside area bout ten raised beds where they grow Leafy Vegetables. They apply biological sprays such as Neem Oil. They have been out of the market for over a month, building up production. They should be back in the Market by November.

DIRECTIONS TO THE GREEN MARKET

Follow the Saddle Road from San Juan or Maraval.

From SanJuan, pass through the Upper Santa Cruz Village Centre with Fire Station, Gas Station, grocery.

Round a couple more bends, you’ll come to a three story building.

The Market is on the right, opposite.

From Maraval,

Pass Undercover,Saddle Vale.

Stay on the main road and you’ll see the market carpark on the left.

Local Saints and Souls

Preparing: People paint graves in time for All Saints’ Day

November 1st and November 2nd

All Saints and All Souls Day is a significant time for the Catholic community all over the world. Known as All Hallows’ Day or Hallowmas or Solemnity of All Saints, the abbreviated version, All Saints is how many people refer to it today. Celebrated on November 1 by Roman Catholics and other smaller religious bodies to honour all saints known and unknown, this day is followed by All Souls, observed November 2 which commemorates the faithfully departed.

Catholics celebrate All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day in the fundamental belief that there is a prayerful spiritual communion between those in the state of grace who have died and are either being purified in purgatory or are in heaven (the ‘church penitent’ and the ‘church triumphant’, respectively), and the ‘church militant’ who are the living. A time of prayer, Monsignor Cuthbert Alexander, a parish priest and vicar of communications within the Archdiocese of Port of Spain noted that one day is not held in higher regard than the other but both days are significant and address different things. All over the world people practice various customs to commemorate this day.

In the Roman Catholic Church, All Saints’ Day is considered a ‘Holy Day of Obligation’ in many but not all countries. This means going to Mass on the date is required unless one has a good reason to be excused from that obligation such as illness. However, in a number of countries that do list All Saints’ Day as a Holy Day of Obligation, All Saints’ Day is transferred to the adjacent Sunday if November 1 falls on a Monday or a Saturday.

Local Soca's 2015

8-)

Attention all Carnival devotees and debutants this is a Festival Alert!

Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms?

Frequently sneaking looks at your calendar, or gazing longingly at costumes online? Are your hips continuously making involuntary twitching motions to a beat only they can hear?

Have no fear, in this his first release for Carnival 2015, Machel Montano the reigning International Power Soca Monarch, works with Precision Productions to divulge a remarkable "Remedy" to the world.

For it to work though, just the right elements had to be lined up to provide all of the necessary aspects of this harmonious elixir.

Constant motion is key and team Precision takes care of the musical aspect of this tonic, providing the precise amount of bass, melodies, and rhythm required to keep the momentum rolling.

The intoxicating recipe may seem familiar, however, Patrick "Mista Vybe" Gordon, working for the first time as a songwriter with the Road March King, used his notable skills to whip up a gripping tale that gives a contemporary slant to this festive therapy.

To put this all together, Machel rises to the occasion adding his unrelenting energy and becomes a vocal vessel, who impeccably conveys the seductive and consuming give and take between masqueraders as they move in-sync charging the atmosphere with their combined euphoria.

The countdown continues and the air ripens with the promise of great things to come for the Carnival season as we bring you the "Remedy “!

Jabari Calliste ~ Trini in breakthrough Nanotechnology Research

http://www.guardian.co.tt/lifestyle/201 ... y-research

What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about one to 100 nanometres. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small things and can be used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science and engineering

PhD student, Jabari Calliste has been involved in major research in nanotechnology at North Carolina University, USA. Calliste, a past student of QRC, along with a team of researchers, has developed a stationary digital breast tomosynthesis (s-DBT) technology that uses a novel multiple focal-spot X-ray source array with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the field emission electron source. This stationary approach can increase acquisition speed and eliminate the focal spot motion.

This study represents the first human tissue imaging with the novel carbon nanotube–based s-DBT device. It has been shown that the s-DBT device offers significant improvement in image quality, including improved modulation transfer function (MTF) and lesion conspicuity in breast phantom studies. This is particularly helpful for radiologists to enable them to make more accurate assessments for patients to have a clear understanding of malignancy diagnosis, and for medical personnel to allow for better determination of surgical requirements. It has been found that malignant lesions in the breast can be difficult to visualise using full-field digital mammography (FFDM) when significant tissue overlap is present.

Tissue overlap is most apparent in breast tissue that is thick and radiographically dense. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) uses a small number of angular projections to reconstruct a pseudo–three-dimensional (3D) volume. The objective of this study was to compare the stationary digital breast tomosynthesis (s-DBT) system to a conventional mammography system in a study of breast specimens. Radiologist evaluation of image quality was assessed in a reader study.

This research represents the first human data acquired using a stationary digital breast tomosynthesis system with carbon nanotubes. The novel s-DBT system was found to be comparable to magnified 2D mammography imaging for malignancy diagnosis. Given the trend of preference for s-DBT over 2D mammography for both mass visibility and margin assessment, s-DBT could be a viable alternative to magnified 2D mammography for imaging breast specimens.

The s-DBT system was found to be comparable to magnified 2D mammography for malignancy diagnosis. Radiology readers preferred magnified 2D mammography for MC visualisation. However, readers trended toward a preference for s-DBT with respect to masses and surgical margin assessment.

8. For The Saturday Parking Peoplee's in POS

So it’s Saturday morning and you want to go to ‘town’ to shop or by Central Bank Auditorium. For whichever of the numerous possible reasons, no one can drop you or pick you back up and you are not even going to attempt to rely on public transportation.

The parkade (your go-to spot during the week) is closed…where are you going to park? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We took a walk around the promenade, asked some questions to some car park attendants and even a police traffic warden and got some answers!

Make sure you have cash, the going rate is $7 an hour but we found some exceptions to that rule. Here are your options!

Image

(Upper) Chacon Street has 3 public car parks and fortunately they open on a Saturday.

A. Chacon Street Car Park
Opening Hours: 6:00 am – 4:00 pm
Cost: $7 per hr

B. The Cark Park with a blue booth
Opening Hours: 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
Cost: $7 per hr

C. Excellent Stores Car Park
Opening Hours: 7:00 am – 3:00 pm
Cost: $8 per hr

There is a car park on Frederick Street where the drag mall previously stood opposite Miguel Moses which is the cheapest car park and it also stays open the latest on a Saturday!

D. Frederick Street
Opening Hours: 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
Cost: $5 per hr

One block over on Henry Street we have another late opener, they stay open as long as there are customers to park. But note depending on where you park, you may need to leave your car key.

E. Henry Street
Opening Hours: 6:00 am till
Cost: $7 per hr

We found this next one by city gate. Look for the green booth.

F. Transcorp Development Company Limited
Opening Hours: 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
Cost: $7 per hr

We noticed Treasury Street has parking along both sides of the street so if you are looking for a free option, try your luck there. Our traffic warden friend told us that the rules for street parking on a Saturday/weekend are a lot more lax than during the week. Same applies to lower Edward Street and St Vincent Street and along the promenade.

Hopefully this information calmed all your fears with regards to knowing your car is safe when you’re downtown POS

With that being said....

Local Adventure ~ Andreas Zmuda and Doreen Kroeber

"I lived in Tobago for 12 years so I know what a wonderful place this is. Every country has its culture but what makes Trinidad and Tobago so special is its mix of cultures"

Trinidad - Our first Caribbean Island!

Well yes – I was a bit nervous yesterday morning... our flight from Mabaruma (English Guyana) to the Caribbean Island of Trinidad, home of the Steel Pan Bands, Calypso and Soca music, was the first long water crossing for us.

About:

Our adventure started on July 21st 2012 in Florida - USA and will take us across deserts, mountains and oceans, along with some of the world’s most remote outposts all over America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, is expected to take 4 years and cover over 100,000 miles with stop offs in 80 countries, till we will reach on July 21st, 2016 with our "flying motorcycle" Sydney - Australia

Andreas Zmuda and Doreen Kroeber left Florida on July 21, 2012 on an ultralight plane imported from France. Their mission, to fly around the world as free as a bird.

The couple had met in the Amazon when Zmuda, a tour guide who organises trips into the Amazon, set eyes on Kroeber, an engineer and part of the tour.

From that moment it was a meeting of two adventure-loving people who just had to explore the world together after that.

“She quit her job and her studies to do something she had never done before. This was her idea and we decided to follow the wind together.”

The couple travels in an ultra-light plane now fondly known as a trike because it appears to be a tricycle with wings. It is a registered aircraft able to cross borders of every country.

The couple flies from as low as 1,500 feet to heights of 15,000 feet depending on their location.

The daring aspect of this mode of flight is the open nature of it. There is no roof, no door, no floor and Zmuda steers the wings with his hands. Further, the wing is held by one bolt.

“We use body weight shift to steer the plane. It’s just us sitting one behind the other in a plane that can carry only 1,000 pounds and that includes the super unleaded gas and the weight of our own bodies. Just us and the bare essentials, free as a bird on the wing.”

Trinidad is the 20th country that the couple has visited. After two years and three months and the likelihood of another four years on the wing, the couple is taking some time out in Trinidad and Tobago.

“We are really happy to have reached Trinidad and Tobago. Besides being the first Caribbean country on our itinerary, it is like a second home to me.

I want to share with Doreen this important part of my life.

“When we were welcomed by the air traffic controller at Piarco and later greeted so warmly by Farouk Khan, I knew that I had come home, if only for a little while,” Zmuda said.

All has not been smooth flying for the couple. Zmuda gets serious when he talks about the risky emergency landing they made in Mexico when turbulent winds were making it unsafe for flight.

They spent some days with the Mafia.

Their experience in Ecuador proved to be another high-risk occurrence.

“Because of very heavy rains at the time of our flight over Ecuador, we were forced to make an emergency landing on a beach. This took some skill to accomplish under such conditions because if I had dipped the front wheel into the loose sand there was the possibility that we would have flipped over. However, I am proud to say that that was my best landing ever.”

Kroeber’s dream is to fly over elephants in Africa. According to Zmuda, she is always very adventurous this is why they make a great flying team.

The highlight of the couple’s travels so far was their flight across the Andes at nine thousand feet.
“After the warmth of flying from the United States and Mexico through Central and South America to Chile, the cross-over to Argentina was very cold. It was a beautiful experience, however, flying over all those snow-capped mountains of the Andes.

“Our journey up the eastern coast of South America entailed flying over Brazil, Suriname and Guyana.

“However, the water crossing to Trinidad’s south-east coast proved to be a memorable experience as between breaks in the clouds, the green forests of the island rose out of the blue water to welcome us home. We are only sorry that we were not able to get photos of this because of the mass of clouds over the area.”

For Zmuda and Kroeber this is not about making a world record. According to them, they have made many records since they began their trip anyway. It is about daring to do what they now love and enjoying every minute of it.

The couple produces a movie every year and is currently writing their third book on their epic travels.

Their stay in Trinidad and Tobago should make for very interesting reading.
