Local Weekends Events an Ting ~ Sat9th-Sun10th November 2014

1. Watersports ~ "Jet Lev Waterpack" and Jet Skis

Sat 8th November 2014 ~ Time: 8am - 12 noon ~ Chaguaramas ~ The Kayak Centre

Cost: Jet Lev - $ 800 ~ Jet skis - $150 per 15 mins

Product

The product can only be used on water and allows the user to fly at up to 8.5m,

Controlling height, direction and speed by handheld controls.
It's powered by water sent up through a tube to a jetpack attached to the user's back.
Two pressure guns fire water into the lake or river,
Generating enough power to push the user into the air.

Image
Jet Lev

The carbon fiber Jetlev R200 employs a powerful 4-stroke engine,
An astonishing 250 HP and water nozzle reaction force to achieve stable,
Controlled flight. This design makes flight controls very simple, light and intuitive.

The propulsion engine, fuel and related systems remain on a separate vessel
tethered behind the jetpack.

Water is the ideal jet propulsion medium as its high density can carry
Vast amounts of power at much lower velocities, and generate nozzle reaction
Forces much more effectively, than gases.

Inherent stability and effortless control: Even though the jetpack can
Generate upwards of 500 pounds of thrust for lift and propulsion,
The flight controls are isolated from that thrust and only take a few ounces of effort to adjust.

Life jackets will be provided and swimming is not a necessity.

Local SteelPan Innovator ~ Elliot "Ellie" Mannette

"Nearly 70 years after he became involved in the steelpan's early development, he continues his unparalleled odyssey as the premier master craftsman of the steel ensemble's instrumental components."

Elliott “Ellie” Mannette stands in the pantheon of Pan as the Father of the Modern Steelpan for his scientific breakthroughs that changed the course of music history.

The innovations that created the steelpan were the result of a community ferment in which Ellie Mannette found himself at the age of 11. That was when he moved from his birthplace of Sans Souci on Trinidad’s northeast coast to Woodbrook, just outside Port of Spain, and landed at the heart of the forces that would give birth to the steelpan.

His journey began with an introduction to Carnival when he performed with the New Town Cavalry Tamboo Bamboo Band, which would later claim a place in steelband history as Alexander’s Ragtime Band. In 1940, at age 13, he helped to organize a group called the Oval Boys, predecessor of Invaders Steel Orchestra which he led for almost three decades.

The 1940s was a period of intense and inspired music experimentation as groups of mainly teenaged boys from east to west Port of Spain competed under threat of jail. The colonial authorities’ war-time ban on drumming, tamboo bamboo and public noise pushed them to experiment with metal paint pans and biscuit tins which yielded the discovery of how pitch might vary depending on where the metal was struck.

Ellie Mannette’s major innovation came soon after World War II. A machinist by trade, he sank the top of a 55-gallon oil drum, creating more space for cleaner notes. The result was the prototype instrument for today’s single tenor pan. His tuning made Invaders’ mellow tone the most sought-after quality for bands in the 1950s, with its tuners spreading Mannette’s innovations to other bands. He also introduced rubber on the tip of pan-sticks to help acquire this tone.

The breakthrough opened the door to greater experimentation in paving the way for steel orchestras. Ellie Mannette continued his work, bringing a sophisticated approach to pan tuning by using a stroboscope to analyze and shape the harmonic blend.

In 1967, Ellie Mannette migrated to the United States where his work continues under the University Tuning Project at West Virginia University, consolidating the science and pedagogy of the pan making and tuning process.

In 2000, he was awarded the Chaconia Medal (Silver) for outstanding cultural achievement

Local Wasps ~ Potter Wasps

This is the time of year when the odd looking clay nests produced by potter wasp may be found hanging from the undersides of leaves or plant stems, however, potter wasps create their nesting artistry using clay rather than paper.

As their common name describes, potter wasps fashion small rounded jug-like nests out of clay, and they attach the nests to leaves, twigs, or to structures such as window seals. The 3/8 - 3/4" long potter wasp females don't gather mud for their nests.

They first collect water and then mix it with dry soil using their mandibles. The mud mixture is transported to the nest-making site where it is fashioned into individual pots ranging in size from 1/4 - 6/16" in diameter. The entire construction process may require a couple of hundred trips over several hours.

As the pot nears completion, the female lays a single egg attached by a thread to the inside surface of the nest. They then provision the pot with a caterpillar or beetle larva that has been paralyzed by a sting.

Once provisioned, the pot is sealed with a clay plug leaving the hapless paralyzed prey to await the wasp's hatchling larva.

People of Trinidad and Tobago ~ Queen's Park Savannah.

He’s homeless and has been living under a tree at the Corner of Maraval Road and Circular Road for the last few months.

“My name? I don’t know. I‘ve been on my own for as long as I can remember. I have no family.
I’ve lived all over Trinidad- Belmont, Diego Martin, Chaguanas, and Caroni. I’m a drifter.

I stay for a while and then move on.

I only remember one thing from when I was a small child; I was locked up in a room and told to study.

I think everybody is born under a sign and mine is the humming bird.

When I look at the lines on my hand, I see the shape of one.

If you watch them, you will see them fly towards the hibiscus plants, land on the leaves, feed, and then leave.

All that is left when they are gone is dew drops - there’s no damage to the flower.

I play music. You want to hear something?"

He drummed on his tin and sang the National Anthem - a little off key but pretty good nevertheless.

“Want to hear my second favourite?”…….he sang “Joy to the World”.

“If I lived on an island and I was the only one there- I’d be ok

"This gentleman is a tower of inspiration and enduring courage.

He doesn't remember his name....the poor man has been in solitude for so long...no one has asked his name.

His past would haunt him if he only had the misfortune to remember it.

Surrounded by humans in a bustling society but all alone"

Local Calypso Icon ~ Campanero

Reginald Best also known as Campanero.

Campanero is now at the ripe age of 84 years and still has memories of his good old days at the Calypso Tents with some of the old time greats.

Many of the older folks would remember such great songs like,"Footsee", "Tie yuh pork with ah twine" and "Saltfish".

He still creates his songs without writing them, that he has never written on paper any of his compositions, they are all in his head

Remember by Calypso's our stories are told,so long live Calypso, long live Calypso, long live Calypso

Local Nariva Swamp and the Manatees

It Boils down to a Fundamentally Basic Concept:

Manatees are Part of a System.

If you Remove any Component from a System, there will be an Effect on Something Else.

Manatees could die if we Kill most of the Plants they Depend on for Food.

Manatees Help control the Vegetation that can Obstruct Waterways.

They also provide a Benefit by Processing the Vegetation they Eat and Passing it Back Out into the Environment as a Form of Fertilizer
