Apple today has started to give the option to purchase iPhone 4's unlocked in the United States. Prices range from $650 for the 16GB White and Black to $750 for the 32GB White and Black.

*Note Apple isn't the decision maker when it comes to unlocking the actual phone, that is left up to the carrier. These unlocked models will work anywhere in the world but they are identical to the AT&T models meaning that 3G will work on AT&T and not T-Mobile USA.

Hopefully AT&T follows suit with an option for customers to unlock their iPhones.

I just called bmobile and they said for existing cutomers that don't have hotspots and who take iPhone data plans we will be able to get 3G on our phones. I asked if this meant that we would see the little 3G icon on our phones finally appear and she said yes and the hotspots are just bundled with the phones so 4G speed can be accessed but the 3G gsm system is now activated once the appropriate plan is added. I'll see if I can go bmobile after work and add the plan. I don't know how true it is and I know it just says GPRS/EDGE on the iPhone 4 bmobile landing page but I really hope it is.

Well I had some chats with the reps online and decided to ask a few things. The outcome;

They stated they would advise customers if Trinidad would be listed in the iTunes store as they have no confirmation yet.

And the iPhones are not activated through iTunes either.

Guys,

i restarted my iPhone 4 this morning (4.2.1 - BB 02.10.04) and noticed a bell icon with a line through it next to the battery. It just appeared there for the first time since I using the device about a week now.

I figured it was probably an icon to indicate when it on silent but when I switched back to loud, the icon does not change or disappear, still has the line through it.

Any info on what it is or what's happening?

^ ^ never saw that icon next to the battery before...

You sure it's not the rotation lock icon?

As of now since bmobile has not been listed as an official carrier on the apple support page I think they would be activated over the counter when you buy the phone. I'm not sure what they have in place for existing iPhone customers a all the reps were given was for new iPhone customers and I have to go in a front office to see what they can do.

Icon is like that of the ringer when you flip the switch to silent

*EDIT*

Rotation working normal.

yes, it looks like bmobile is selling unlocked phones, if you are not activating it through itunes, they are probably activated already

i wasnt told about the pay down part, was only told the price of the handsets, so i thought, 3,000 + 250 a month for a few years wasnt bad at all..

but at this rate, I am buying an unlocked one from Apple.com this week and will have it sent down.. would have liked to give my money to the local carrier, but say what..

well i just waited 20 mins on hold to try and find out. but gave up
but if you are not activating it at home, they are prob doing it there, via itunes, and unlocked phones you dont need a specific itunes store/country... so thats my take on it... i'll prob go into tstt and lunch and see what they say

so anyone seeing a 3G icon?

I can't see them rolling out 3G so soon, so the deal is that they will offer a 4G wifi hotspot free with all iPhones in order to appease apple's 3G carrier requirements?

is that it?

my bmobile tech chat transcript from this morning

AARON: hello
lwillia2:
Good morning. Welcome to Bmobile Webchat. My name is Ms Williams. How may I help you?
AARON: please clarify, when buying an iPhone 4, you pay 3500 for the handset and another 3000 up front as a downpayment??
lwillia2: That is correct.
AARON: *Please tell your management that this is way over priced!! - I will be ordering the iPhone 4 from Apples website unlocked for 4500 TTD*
AARON: thank you
lwillia2: Thank you for using our Web Chat service and for making Bmobile your option.

so i guess they dont care either

You have to add th bmobile iPhone data package before you will see the 3G symbol. And it's about time we get some benefit over the lame ass GPRS package we've been running.

so if I take the micro sim from a legit iPhone from bmobile and put it in a regular unlocked iPhone 4 I should get the 3G? once configured correctly

"The status bar at the top the screen means that the phone is locked..."

A padlock with a circular arrow around it in the status bar at the top the screen means that the phone is locked to portrait mode and will not rotate to landscape mode. This can be turned on and off by double clicking home so that your open apps are displayed then swiping these icons to the right until your iPod contols appear, you should see an icon with a circular arrow. This icon locks your screen rotation
