So... I was waiting for this movie since the teaser came out, and I did some digging into the story line for any info I could get on it. I had a good idea what to expect from it but I was still BLOWN AWAY by it!

District 9
is my movie for the year :D

not necessarily a mind job like 1999 The Matrix but damn close.

District 9 is deep, mentally provocative, metaphorical and just enough CGI to glue the story.

Anyone remember the name of the fast food joint?

I wouldn't be surprised if Sharlto Copley "Wikus" was nominated for an Oscar for that role.

District 9 was an excellent movie and very original,
especially the almost racist parallels it brought up.

Nevertheless, I couldn't help but wonder more about the prawns...i guess they're leaving room for a sequal..

I'd love to know more of their backstory.

Also, question.....were those white MNU Vans Hiluxes?

did not want to spoil the fact that maaaany trailer scenes were not in the movie,,, but from what i under stand the concept for this movie came from expanding on a couple of short films. some trailer scenes may be able to come from district 10, but there are many others which would predate D-9 movie, according to the story line.

what was it missing, mindless violence, poor acting, pointless one-liners, story line that not meshing?
care to say what would have made it better?

Okay, I finally went tonight to see this. I must say that hands down, this is one of the best movies that I've seen in quite some years. It's refreshingly different than the mainstream Hollywood movies and that's what makes it quite so. Quite compelling, deep, and insightful. I really can't and won't compare it to other movies to be honest. For those who haven't seen it yet, go see it and let us know what you think! :)

It's hard for movies to impress me. To the point that I focus more on movie, show and video game sountracks. When I saw the trailers I was interested, but I thought to myself this looks like a torrent. I downloaded it and watched it last night on my 14.5" laptop and it STILL BLEW MY MIND. DO NOT download this movie. Pay to see it properly.
I regret doing that.
The storyline was seamless
The Cinematography was flawless
From beginning to end, boring to climax was linear, and you were never bored.
I didn't even notice when it switched modes, I was so stuck to it.
^And all this is with a cam version. Imagine at MT. I think I'll still go see it.

was never interested in seeing GI JOE.

i just found that the movie was nothing different from the typical man vs alien story line except for the visual effects thats all. it is the same story, we don't want you aliens here just leave or its the part where they have hi-tech weapons and we humans want to use them.......steups. Whats different? let me guess the racism towards the prawns!

^ set in South Africa it was a parallel to the days of apartheid. The previously opressed blacks were now oppressing another race without remorse or rememberance. There were whites in SA who never thought of blacks as humans. To throw a spin on it where the viewer is truly unbiased because of an ultimately new race makes us realise how easy it is for us to harbour hatred and methods of control on those we do not understand or fear.

The MNU analogy in itself was epic since today "South Africa is ... the birthplace of the modern private military contractor".

Today when we have displaced people all over the world in Isreal and Palestine most of the rest of the world cannot truly feel what both sides are feeling. We are always one sided. Showing the story with an entirely new race compels more rational thinking and understanding.

I could write pages on this and not even talk about the visual effects.

well said... there were scenes where the "white" overlay was apperent though....the "abortion" scene...which mirrors the horrors that the Black S.AFrican's wenth through when the "MNU/ANC army" wud rape the women and then come back and "abort" those children..most times killing the mother in the process.

The illiteracy amongst the Prawns was also something to observe that the MNU made fun of.

thing is..we have a District 9 in trini and we very frequently make jokes/jive about it...the infamous "KABTFAST" acronym that we use so freely can be applied.

But as Duane said..we're very onesided in this place...

Alas, this movie wont make it to the Oscars becuz of its reality.

Unlike other Alien Movies, the Aliens are actually on a level below humans and they weren't hell bent on destroying the world?

Humans embraced the aliens and didnt chase them off or destroy them upon contact?

Compare this movie to Close Encounters of the Strange Kind and see the vast difference.

Expect District 9 to have a lot of copies in the coming years. This movie has single handly redefined Sci-Fi movies. Just like how Evil Dead did Horror Movies.

I support a D9 2nd Viewing in Globe tuesday 5 dollar night.

thats right. I think that after seeing this, you really haveto come good to bring an "Alien" type movie and not be impressed.

Still trying to understand the bit when the "leadership" pod left the main ship...
