Lightning struck a PowerGen power station during heavy rains yesterday, causing blackouts in several parts of Trinidad.

The incident caused seven generators to trip at the Point Lisas facility, affecting areas in Point Fortin, Fyzabad, Santa Flora and surrounding areas.

Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) corporate communications manager, Annabelle Brasnell, said areas in west Trinidad, including Diamond Vale, Diego Martin and surrounding areas, and Trincity and Macoya in the east, were also without supply.

Brasnell said T&TEC crews were working with PowerGen to restore power to customers. The generators were expected to be running last night.

"To avoid widespread load-shedding around the country, and to minimise disruptions to all customers, T&TEC is appealing to all customers to reduce their electricity usage until the situation is resolved. This requires that customers not use high demand appliances such as dryers and aircondition units," Brasnell said.

actually heard the lightening strikes move from off-shore, pass around by powergen, then move eastwards,,, like the storm passed around our plant
