Mac OS X Lion has made some progress towards resolution independence with a new HiDPI display mode, according to ArsTechnica.

As technology improves manufacturers are able to build displays with higher and higher resolutions. Currently, the higher resolution your monitor is, the smaller the visual elements look. Developers need a way to draw an interface element at the same visible size but with more pixels.

With Mac OS X Lion, Apple has got rid of arbitrary scalability and taken a lesson from its iOS Retina Display. A single check box now enables "HiDPI" display mode. With this mode enabled, everything is drawn with twice as many pixels as its non-HiDPI equivalent.

Unlike iOS, Mac OS X has to contend with a much wider variety of display sizes. Thus far, there has been no Mac equivalent of the iPhone 4, arriving with a double-density display and quickly selling so many units that it represents a significant portion of the installed base. Still, the ease with which iOS developers adapted to the retina display gives me confidence that this pixel-doubling approach can work on the Mac as well. We just have to wait a bit longer. By now, we should be used to it.

With this groundwork in place, Apple could release a display with a resolution of 3840x2400. In HiDPI mode, the display would show elements at the exact same size as the 1920x1200 LED display; however, they would be much clearer.

Taking a look at the screenshots below you can see that Apple needs to update some of its bitmap graphics for HiDPI display but at least progress is being made.

Last I heard it was the latter.

------

Apple has just released iOS 4.3.5 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This update comes just days after the iOS 4.3.4 release and it resolves a “security issue.”

iOS 4.3.5 Software Update
A security issue has been resolved with certificate verification.

10 days after downloading 4.3.4 and now 4.3.5. smh, I can't wait for iOS 5 and delta updates.

Gevey Pro still works in 4.3.5 for anyone that was wondering, I already tested it.

Having my Ipad 2 delivered tommorrow.
My itunes is still on 9.0.3.11 ; but I've been reading of issues with the latest version and syncing with the Ipad 2.
Should I go ahead and update itunes, and auto update the firmware when it arrives? Will I still be able to jail break if I desire?
Been out of the apple loop for a while.

Hope to God it comes with 4.3.3. My iPhone came with 4.3.2 so hopefully your iPad isnt updated to anything besides 4.3.3.

Apple is of course only signing 4.3.5 which isnt jailbreakable at least for the iPad 2.

If it is not on 4.3.3 well that would suck. That is the only jailbreakable f/w. I didnt read anything about sync issues with the iPad 2 and latest iTunes. But update to an iTunes that supports the iPad 2. I think it was 10.2? not sure.

Just remember, unless it is on 4.3.3, then you can jailbreak it. Even if its on 4.3.1, 4.3.2, etc. basically anything besides 4.3.3, you cant jailbreak k? because apple is not signing 4.3.3 again, you could only update to 4.3.5.
aite?

Whey, you deliberatly trying to confuse me now. What I gather is either way dont update the firmware if I want to jailbreak.

simple answer is this.

update your iTunes to the latest software available, there isn't any issue regarding that.

If your iPad 2 comes with 4.3.3, which it has a good chance of being shipped with due to the fact 4.3.4 and 4.3.5 were released within the last 12 days, you can jailbreak.

If you iPad 2 does come with any other firmware other than 4.3.3 you CANNOT jailbreak regardless as there is no way to downgrade back to 4.3.3 without saved SHSH blobs.

4.3.3 ftw.
Got the snap on cover and from Switch Easy I ordered the Covermate for the back.
Only thing is what brand to get as the clear screen protector. I've been reading some negative reviews about Zagg which I was leaning too.
Any suggestions?

I good with my iPad first gen for now, still looking brand new thanks to my otter box. Ever since I started to hear iPad 3 rumors before the iPad 2 was even released I decided to skip that gen, when the next iPad releases (possibly in September) I'll upgrade then.

I doubt the older redsn0ws would be compatible but if you have your blobs saved, downgrade, then upgrade the iPad baseband, when you're done with that just re-upgrade your phone back to 4.3.5 and jailbreak on that. once you upgrade to 6.15 that baseband is preserved regardless of what you do.

Apple, Inc. Is Now Richer Than The United States Government
By Waisybabu | July 29th, 2011

The news come from a report by Financial Times. The fruit company up in Cupertino – which produces a variety of consumer electronics such as the iPhone, iPod, iPad and Macs etc. and software, mostly intended for these gadgets – has cash reserves of $75.876 billion, as of July when Apple announced their quarterly earnings. The US government, on the other hand, has an operating balance of only $73.786 billion.

Apple, Inc. is, hence, $2 billion richer than the most powerful government in the world.

From Financial Times:

Steve Jobs is now more liquid than Uncle Sam.

While it’s highly unlikely that President Barack Obama is looking to ask the founder and chief executive of Apple Inc. for a loan, it became a fact as of Thursday afternoon — the world’s largest technology company now has more cash on hand than the most powerful democracy on Earth has spending room.

As Republicans and Democrats continue to work towards a compromise to the country’s debt ceiling crisis, the U.S. Treasury Department said on Thursday that Washington now has a total operating balance of only US$73.768-billion.

Meanwhile, Apple currently boasts a cash reserve of US$75.876-billion, as of its most recent quarterly earnings report at the end of June.

One cannot, of course, directly compare the two figures but you can still can get a very clear idea of just how profitable Apple has become since returning to profitability in the years after 1998 with the introduction of the iMac.

The $73 billion operating balance that the US government has represents just how much money they have to spend before hitting the ever looming debt ceiling whereas the $75 billion cash reserves Apple, Inc. has represents the extra money they have available for doing whatever they please. Apple, in fact, has enough money to buy the entire mobile phone industry (except for Samsung).

The years after 2007 have been great to Apple. They launched the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad in the last few years and all of them have been successful.

Apple currently is the leading smartphone manufacturer in America with a 28% share. It is also the world’s leading smartphone vendor, beating Nokia, having shipped more than 20 million iPhones in the second quarter of 2011.

Before I wrap up this post, you should also know that Apple’s current capital of $363 billion makes it the world’s second largest company, after multinational oil and gas corporation Exxon Mobil.
