Mosquitoes are a serious nuisance; from that terrible buzz near your ear when you’re trying to sleep, to the itchy, swollen bumps they leave after biting you.
If you didn’t know, it’s only the females of the species who bite us.
Male mosquitos prefer to feed on nectar, generally avoiding humans.
Mosquitos can also be a health-risk ~ they can transmit diseases through their bite (including Malaria, Yellow Fever, West-Nile Fever, and more).
In-fact, mosquitos are responsible for more human deaths than all wars, combined.
You can buy gadgets and products that repel these nasty bugs, but they’re all temporary and can be irritating or dangerous.
Instead, you can grow certain plants that repel mosquitos naturally ~
Lemon Verbena: This lovely plant has a light citrus scent and can be added to tea for both flavor and it's calming effect on the digestive system. You can plant it in the ground or in a deep pot and let it scare away those nasty bugs. Make sure it has a good supply of water and sunlight.
Cloves:Cloves are the flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum plant. You can plant it around the yard to enjoy its mosquito-repelling properties, as well as use the cloves to spice up food.
Mint:Most common as an added flavor for tea, mint also has powerful mosquito-repelling properties. All species of mint are useful repellants. Mint needs sunlight and plenty of water to grow. You can plant it in your garden or in pots. If you choose to put it in your garden, be aware that it likes to spread, and can sometimes take over and kill weaker plants.
Rosemary: A favorite herb for savory dishes, it's also a potent repellent. Plant it in your garden or in deep planters and let this lovely bush grow and take care of your mosquito problem.
Lemon Thyme:A natural mosquito repellent, lemon thyme is also a great herb for seasoning dishes. Plant it in pots to get lovely little plants around the house, or in your garden to control mosquito population.
Lavender: The scent of lavender is often a favorite for many people, and it's commonly used in aromatherapy for its soothing properties. For mosquitos, however, it's a very strong repellent. Plant them in your garden or in pots in your house and enjoy the scent of the beautiful purple flowers.
Floss Flower: These lovely tiny flowers are superb at repelling mosquitos. Make sure you only grow them in a pot, as they tend to overgrow in the soil and take over the entire garden. Make sure they're out of reach of children and animals, as they can be toxic.
Pitcher Plant: These carnivorous plants grow natural pitchers, filled with appealing-scented nectar to lure bugs in. Once the bugs get inside the pitcher, they can't get out again and are digested by the plant. Plant them in planters by window sill and enjoy their mosquito-capturing properties.
Cadaga Tree - aka "Cadagi": These beautiful trees are natural barriers for mosquitos, who hate their scent. Plant a few of these in your garden and let nature free you of those pesky biters.

Ben Bougeois Wins Tobago PRO 2014
On Tuesday, November 18th, 2014, the Open Division of the Tobago Pro Surf Contest was contested in perfect 3-5’ waves at the Caribbean’s premiere right point break, Mt.Irvine, Tobago.
It had been 23 months since the last running of the Open Division of the Tobago Pro, which is traditionally reserved for much larger surf in the 8-10’ range.
With a favorable but uncertain forecast, combined with a dwindling opportunity to run the event in 2014, event organizers ‘rolled the dice’ and took a chance on a long period swell from the North Atlantic.
The contest, which is normally judged on big drops and heavy barrels, turned in to a performance surfing showdown with close attention being paid to technical surfing, with power and flow.
International professional surfer Ben Bougeois visiting Tobago from Virginia Beach, USA, was invited to participate in the event and he managed to outperform the heavy crew of locals on hand in the challenging surf.
The former World Championship Tour (WCT) Surfer is only the second Tobago Pro Open Division winner since the events inaugural running in December 2012.
Bougeois is the first international surfer to win the division, finding his name next to local favorite Adrian De Silva on the Scott Tucker Memorial Trophy.
In the highly contested event final, Bougeois managed to best his host and long time friend, local pro surfer Jason Apparicio.
In the spirit of the event, Apparicio congratulated Bougeois on his victory as the finalists celebrated the results and the successful running of another edition on this specialty event.
After hoisting the Scott Tucker Memorial Trophy, Bougeois took his time to thank the local surfers, judges and event organizers for the opportunity to participate in the event and to enjoy surfing the perfect waves of Mt.Irvine with just a handful of local surfers in the water.
Apparicio was 2nd place in the Open Division, the best performance by a local surfer, and was awarded with the Scott Tucker Memorial Surfboard which is custom made by Sharp Eye Surfboards and donated the Tucker Family.
Apparicio was also the top performing master (Over 35) surfer and was awarded with a prize of 2 nights at Blue Waters Inn, Speyside, an amazing prize provided by the official event hotel sponsor for the third year in a row.
Other local surfers closely contested the Open Division Final as well, including third place surfer, Chris Dennis of Rampanalagas, Trinidad. Che Lovelace, Stuart Hutton and Andrew Awai placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
This event was made possible by the support of the Surfing Association of Trinidad and Tobago (SATT) via financial backing of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.
The commitment of the officials and judges of the SATT, combined with the support of the local Tobago Surfers, made the execution of the event a huge success.
The official prize giving of the Tobago Pro 2014 will be held on Sunday 28th December 2014 at Mt.Irvine Beach. This event would also feature the Opening Ceremony of the Tobago Pro 2015, and the surfing of the junior divisions.
The prize the Best Overall Waterman Performance for 2014 will be voted on and presented at the prize giving. There will be live music and other entertainment on hand for the event.
Final Results:
OPEN DIVISION 1. Ben Bougeois 2. Jason Apparicio 3. Chris Dennis 4. Che Lovelace - TT 5. Stuart Hutton - TT 6. Andrew Awai - TT 7 Justin Tang 7 Cheyne Jobson 9 Eamon Singh 9 Adrian de Silva 11 Duane Kenny 11 Josh Lewis
Best Masters Performance (35+) - Jason Apparicio
4.Local 2014 Parang News
The sound of cuatros, maracas and box bass may be missing this holiday season as the National Parang Association yesterday announced that all parang shows had been suspended. This is because of a delay in the distribution of funds to the association by the Ministry of Arts. Shows will remain suspended until the association receives funds.
Minister in the Ministry of Arts Lincoln Douglas, in a phone interview yesterday, said funds were still being processed and he was surprised the association would contact the media. “The money is still going through the system. I don’t feel there has been a delay. It is being processed. “I have been speaking to the association, even up to this morning (yesterday),” Douglas said.
To date we have hosted five such shows and the cumulative debt is now over $100,000. As of now, we have decided that all future shows will be suspended until the funds promised to us are received.” The executive said it had embarked on several events to raise funds, including a boat ride, a collaboration with the Patrons of Queen’s Hall and the Friday Night Parang Lime on the Friday closest to each month-end, since May

A picturesque landscape positioned opposite to the bay is Saut D’eau Island, a small uninhabited sanctuary where to visit requires a permit from the Forestry Department. Healing with Horses was created in 2010 as a non-profit organization from a dream by its Founder and Director, Veronika Danzer LaFortune. With one horse rescued from the rain forest and a heart filled with love and hope, Ms. Danzer-LaFortune and her husband Lennon LaFortune created a place for children aged 6-12 from different backgrounds, with varying physical abilities and of different nationalities to come together to enjoy therapy and creative play.
After two extremely successful summer camps, we realize the need to expand our activities to include weekly sessions on the grounds of Healing with Horses. We offer children from the area, who come from various schools and organizations to participate in after school opportunities which include arts and crafts, music, dance, yoga, nature walks and gardening, sports and the exceptional experience of being with horses.
Our healthy herd of gentle rescue horses gives the children a way to experience a strong sense of bonding and affection, along with the physical benefits of strengthening and improved balance from horseback riding. Each child, is given the opportunity to ride and spend time grooming, feeding and communing at the stables.
The children are guided by the teachers and encouraged to be creative and expressive while enjoying being outdoors, surrounded by nature and the sea. We hold yoga classes on the cliff, overlooking the bay and our gardens border the horses pasture by the sea. Each child enjoys physical activity which is carefully monitored by the teachers and volunteers.

Malpighia emarginata is a tropical fruit-bearing shrub or small tree in the family Malpighiaceae. Common names include Acerola, Barbados cherry, West Indian cherry and Wild Crepe Myrtle.
Acerola is native to South America, southern Mexico, and Central America, but is now also being grown as far north as Texas and in subtropical areas of Asia, such as India.
It is known for being extremely rich in vitamin C, almost as much as camu camu, although it also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, and B3, as well as carotenoids and bioflavonoids, which provide important nutritive value and have antioxidant uses.
The vitamin C produced by the fruit is better absorbed by humans than synthetic ascorbic acid.

Local Actor Singer and Film director ~ Vivien Armour
Her sister in Boston rented a big screen. Her dad threw a party here. And everybody else who knew her had their eyes glued to their television sets on November 11, when Trinidad-born, Canada-based actress Vivien Elizabeth Armour appeared in the 200th episode of cable channel CW’s Supernatural. The series stars teen heartthrobs Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) and Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester).
The 23-year-old former Bishop Anstey student did not have many lines in the episode, but she believes although her scenes were short, it was enough to open the door for more gigs in the future.
Speaking in an interview from her Vancouver home via telephone, Armour explained the episode, titled Fan Fiction—which was in the 10th season of Supernatural—was a tribute to the army of fans the show had attracted since its introduction back in 2005.
“Fan Fiction was like a huge love letter to the fans, coming from the team of Supernatural,” said Armour.
What probably helped Armour land this role was that her background as a highly trained vocalist was put to good use in the episode which was, coincidentally, a musical one.
Armour played the character of Katie, one of three girls from a private girls' school who decide to stage a musical about Supernatural. Dean and Sam, who are brothers in the series, are seen in the episode watching the musical which depicts their lives as demon and ghost hunters.
Armour, a musical theatre graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) in London, got to perform some of the show’s original material, as well as cover several songs including the unofficial Supernatural theme song, Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas.
She actually played the role of a man—Bobby Singer—in the musical. Though her character required some cross-dressing and wearing a beard, Armour said the experience was phenomenal, just having the support from all the cast members.
“It was a special episode so a lot of us had to cross-dress, playing the characters of the Winchesters. But I know I am speaking for my co-stars when I say that we never felt more comfortable and appreciated as we did on that set,” she said.
She described the Supernatural team as a family, having formed a strong bond over its ten-year existence.
“The two main characters Jared and Jensen, were so welcoming and they’re pretty funny too. Sporting that huge beard earned me a lot of nicknames on the set. But all of it was just pure fun,” she added

Local Christmas ~ Things a TrinBago Man Should Never-Ever Say To His Woman at Christmas Time
An American woman saying “Don’t start none, won’t be none!” is equivalent to a Trinbago woman saying, “You go ahead wit’ me!”
TrinBago women — and I deliberately say Trini — are a no-nonsense bunch when it comes to preparing the house for the Christmas season. They are militant in their vision and war could easily break out when her instructions aren’t carried out with urgency or quality effort.
Just like their children, men fall victim to these repeated calls for duty and they unwittingly invite a devilish tongue-lashing if they ‘lapse’.
A woman makes a natural detective, however, she is a master attorney. She can argue a point. Having observed women over the years and having heard female strangers share stories, I have created a list of ten things a Trinbago man should never, ever say to his TrinBago woman, regardless of if they’re living together.
Some of these quotes just have to be done in local parlance, so excuse me.
1. “I don’t think I’m buying any paint for the outside wall. That’s too much money.”
Possible Woman’s Response: “It wasn’t too much money when you went liming and drinking whole weekend with yuh partners last weekend? Ah sure yuh spend much more than the price of two cans of paint, so please!”
2. “A few partners coming to lime on Boxing Day eh.”
Possible Woman’s Response: “So now I have to go and cook again on Boxing Day? I was just going to cook on Christmas Day and cook enough to last until Boxing Day. (Steups) Like you helping me cook?”
3. “After I eat (on Christmas Day), I will go down by Sammy to lime.”
Possible Woman’s Response: “So you can’t just stay home with me and the children? De fellas will dead if they don’t see you for one day, man?”
4. “All of these groceries you want to buy for just one day?”
Possible Woman’s Response: “Who eats the most in the house, me or you?”
5. “Oh gosh! Yuh walk this store about 20 times! Make up yuh mind what yuh want nah!”
Possible Woman’s Response: “When you’re taking half day to wash de car while I’m slaving away cleaning and washing your clothes I does tell you anything?!”
6. “So you HAVE to get THAT?”
Possible Woman’s Response: “Well, at least I didn’t buy $10,000 rims or some stupid sound system! I work for my money too, so just how you could buy, I could buy. Yuh understand?”
7. “So you can’t just use the purple curtains from last year?
Possible Woman’s Response: “First of all those curtains from last year are LILAC. Secondly, those LILAC curtains would clash with the pattern on the new chairs. Hear nah, I am a woman, so I know what I’m doing.”
8. “This fruit cake not tasting like Mammy own.”
Possible Woman’s Response: “I look like your mother?!”
9. “Why yuh don’t learn to make pastelles instead of using this set of money to buy?”
Possible Woman’s Response: “Who going to sweat in that kitchen to make pastelles? You can’t even take yuh time to make a butter sandwich but you want to tell me to make pastelles? Look, mister!”
10. “Oh gosh, I don’t feel to go to your company dinner, you know.”
Possible Woman’s Response: “No? If Keith and dem ask you to go quite Toco, even 2 o’clock in the morning, you will go though! A little company dinner for three hours you can’t do for me?”
Gentlemen, the moral of the story is, TrinBago women don’t play when it comes to getting things in order at this time of the year. I gently encourage you, stay in your lane. Depending on the situation, embrace the sneaker giant’s tag, just do it
A lichen is a composite organism that emerges from algae or cyanobacteria (or both) living among filaments of a fungus in a mutually beneficial (symbiotic) relationship.
The whole combined life form has properties that are very different to properties of its component organisms.
Lichens come in many colours, sizes, and forms. The properties are sometimes plant-like, but lichens are not plants. Lichens may grow like a tiny, leafless, branching shrub (fruticose), like it has leaves (foliose), like a crust of paint on a surface (crustose), or have other growth forms.
A macrolichen is a lichen that is either bush-like or leafy.
A microlichen is everything else. Here, "macro" and "micro" do not refer to size, but to the growth form.
Common names for lichens may contain the word "moss" (e.g., "Reindeer moss", "Iceland moss"), and lichens may superficially look like and grow with mosses, but lichens are not related to mosses or any plant.
Lichens don't have roots that absorb water and nutrients like in plants.
Instead they produce their own food from sunlight, air, water, and minerals in their environment.
They are not parasites on the plants they may grow on, but only use them as a substrate to grow on or in.
An eight-year-old boy got his Christmas wish yesterday when he was given a surprise visit to the Junior Sammy Group compound in Claxton Bay.
Zion Scipio also got the opportunity to meet Junior Sammy himself in an event that was Solely designed to make his wish come true.
Exclusively reported that Scipio was obsessed with trucks and the Junior Sammy company specifically after seeing Machel Montano’s Ministry of Road Video which was shot on one of the Junior Sammy compounds.
His mother, Sancha Samara, posted her son’s story on the Facebook group Trini Moms Asking if anyone could assist her in reaching out to the company as she had tried Before and was told that meeting Sammy would be impossible as he is a busy man.
The company reached out to us indicating that Sammy was upset with that response and That plans would be made for the boy to meet him.
But what Scipio received yesterday far surpassed his mother’s expectations.
Apart from two trucks painted in the Junior Sammy colours and a tractor, Scipio was given $8000 with A promise that he would receive that amount every year to help with his education. He was also assured Of a job with the company when he leaves school.
A clearly shell-shocked Scipio was also given a company coverall and T’shirts and a ride in a truck driven By Sammy. Machel Montano’s mother, Elizabeth Montano, presented the boy with a bag, lunch kit
And other paraphernalia from her son’s line.
Montano is expected to return to Trinidad this week.
Sammy said the boy’s story brought tears to his eyes. He said growing up, he too loved trucks and Dropped out of school to follow in his father’s footsteps of driving trucks.
The event yesterday included children of the Junior Sammy employees as well as the entire Sammy family
