Employee killed in attempted hit on R&J Cell Tech heir — third attack on business family in two weeks

A loyal employee of R&J Cell Tech was gunned down in what appears to be a botched assassination attempt on his boss, Shane Maharaj — son of the company’s owner.

Twenty-one-year-old Saleem Abdool, described as a long-standing and dedicated worker, was shot near the VEMCOTT traffic lights in San Fernando on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025. He died a short while later at the San Fernando General Hospital.

At the time of the attack, Abdool was driving Shane’s van, while Shane was behind the wheel of a new, yet-to-be-licensed Mercedes Benz.

Investigators believe the gunmen mistook Abdool for Shane and opened fire on the van. The duo had switched vehicles shortly before the brazen shooting.

This is the third attack on members of the Maharaj family in just under two weeks.

On Friday, gunmen shot at the vehicle belonging to Lisa Maharaj’s boyfriend in another apparent attempt to send a violent message to the family.

And on May 13th, Lisa herself narrowly escaped death in a frightening ambush near Gulf City Mall. Armed men in a white B-14 rammed her SUV during heavy rain. Initially believing it was an accident, Lisa grew alarmed when the car that hit her began reversing in sync with hers.

Speaking live with Crime Watch host Ian Alleyne, she recalled the terrifying moment one of the suspects tried to open her SUV door. She immediately locked it and drove straight to the nearest police station. Two shots were fired — one piercing the driver’s door and narrowly missing her.

US Justice Department: Florida teacher aided gun smuggling to T&T

A high school teacher from the state Florida has pleaded guilty to her role in a transnational firearms smuggling operation linked to a criminal organisation based in Trinidad and Tobago.

Shannon Lee Samlalsingh, 46, of Tampa, appeared before a U.S. court on June 20 and admitted to making false statements to a federally licensed firearms dealer.

 According to a statement from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), Samlalsingh now faces up to five years in federal prison.

Between 2020 and 2021, Samlalsingh allegedly purchased a range of firearms and firearm components from dealers in Hillsborough County and Miami-Dade County. 

Federal investigators say she filed multiple ATF Form 4473s, claiming she was the buyer of the weapons, while she was in fact acting on instructions from members of a Trinidadian criminal enterprise.

Authorities say Samlalsingh received money from individuals affiliated with the organization and was directed on exactly what to purchase. She later arranged for the weapons and components to be concealed in cargo items—specifically, a wireless speaker and punching bags—before shipping them to Trinidad and Tobago.

On April 21, 2021, authorities at Piarco International Airport intercepted a shipment arriving from the U.S. 

Two punching bags were found to contain a substantial cache of firearms and accessories,.The seizure also included hundreds of rounds of ammunition for various firearms, highlighting the scale of the operation.

The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with assistance from Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of National Security.

Samlalsingh’s sentencing date has not yet been set.

Just remember the us state agencies have a local presence here to protect their own interests.
