Five teens in court on "terror" charges

FIVE teenagers attending an Islamic school in Cunupia
appeared in the Chaguanas Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with offences linked to a series of late night attacks in which they allegedly
drove alongside vehicles, pretending to be police officers
and frightening people with what looked like a M-16 rifle.

Two 18-year-olds, and three others aged 13, 16, and 17, were arrested by Cunupia Police after people began showing up and calling the police station to report the alleged attacks which happened in the early hours on Sunday.

The five teenagers, represented by attorney Fareed Ali, were charged with the possession of an imitation rifle, common assault and assault on seven people.

One of the 18-year-olds was charged with a prohibited weapon, a Taser gun.

In the Toyota Rav-4 in which the five were held, police also allegedly
found two walkie talkies, knife, ski mask, and camouflage outfit.

Magistrate Joanne Connor granted bail of $100,000 to the 13-year-old.
The 16 and 17-year-old were granted bail of $150,000 each. The two 18-year-olds were granted bail of $200,000 each, after the court was told there were no pending cases against the five.

Bail was granted on the conditions that the five report to the Cunupia
Police station weekly, be home by 6.30p.m. and live with their parents.
