Mountain Biking

Postby dredman1 » June 20th, 2019, 7:10 pm

Guys
The tyres on my MTB are leaking air.
Thinking they may need to change as the bike has been unused for a couple years and when I pump them now, one holds the pressure for about 30mins and the other doesnt inflate at all.
They did not have punctures and held pressure for moths before storage, and I’m thinking they’re dry rotted (or the valves - could be wrong here), but I’m certain they have no punctures.
Does it make sense to buy new tyres locally (they’re 26 x 2.0) or is it better to skybox them in? Or is using a tube a viable option?

Any advice appreciated.

tube or tubeless?
If it's been parked a couple years I'd prob write them off, depending on storage.

I buy tyres online for less than half the local price. that's including shipping, duties and vat.
Shop for clearance deals on jensonusa.com or blueskycycling.com

XLC thorn resistant tubes are cheap.
Look a Schwalbe for under 20usd:

**but call around for local deals as well.

Try Motorcycle Etc, Bike Inn, Mike's Bikes, Geronimos etc
They should have quick stock turnover so you won't get an old tyre

They’re tubeless - the original tyres that came on a Trek 4300. (Bontrager Connection Trail)

It’s been on a bike trainer in a room, so the back tyre has been off the floor (suspended over the magnetic flywheel. The front however obviously has a flat spot,as that had the weight on it.

If i bring in my own tyre will those shops install it for me?

MTB tyres are a breeze to change as a DIY, but any bike shop will (or should) do it for you. I had on some 650b x 2.3 and was able to change both front and rear without tyre levers. Forced it in by hand. On the gravel bike, I took it to Motorcycle etc because I had a ton of work to do on it, and I mostly walk with my own parts. I usually go there because they have plenty spares in stock, as well as top of the line equipment and prob one of the best bike mechs in the country. (disclaimer, not affiliated with them, YMMV)

Ok i thought I remember seeing the need for some specialty equipment to pull the tyre off - but realise i just need a cheap tyre lever. Doesnt look too hard.

Going to call around in a bit and check the tyre prices locally. Wondering if I should even just use tubes instead of buying new tyres altogether.

Take off the tyres and clean them and the rims. Seat them then pass a sponge with soapy water around it and pump. See it that works first

MTB tyres don't even need those if your hands a little tough.

MTB tyres don't even need those if your hands a little tough.

Turns out the tyres had tubes after all, and the tubes were leaking.

The front tyre also had a split along the middle, so that tyre had to change. The rear tyre was good and is holding up with the new tube.

And youtube was quite helpful in both removing the rear wheel from the chain assembly, and removing and installing the tyres.

The tyre levers were not an absolute necessity, but it does make the job easier.

Costs in case anyone is interested were:

Tubes - $40 each
Tyre lever - between $15 and $24 per pair
Tyre - varies from $85 - $225 depending on brand, thread pattern etc.

Thanks again for all the guidance.

went riding in the rain last week, and hit a pothole at about 35 kph with 700x33 Schwalbe G-Ones.
Got a pinch flat in the rear and damaged sidewall on the front. GRR

Sorted new tube and swapped in some spare Roubaix slick tires I have laying around, now realized that both rims are bent and I'm getting a hop and drop. IT'S ANNOYING.

Gonna take it to MCE for a repair this week.

These new tyres run hella fast tho. Can't imagine when I get the rims re-trued.

Got you beat. Returned from a lil vacay only to notice someone broke into the storage room and stole the trusty ole Fuji 2.0, yes. So, on the hunt for a new bike. Should be back on the trail soon enough though.

That sucks. I had several bikes stolen as a youth, but these were cheap bmx types.
check this group for good deals on used bikes.

if all else fails, you can scour ebay and get a sweet deal. I used bikeflights.com to get to the seabox and it was still pretty cheap.

Good news is the rims weren't bent as I thought. Phew.
Even though the tyres were rated at 90psi, it needed almost 130 psi to seat properly. I only cranked it to 100 when installing.

Learned something new today.

nope.
have a fenix that syncs flawlessly, and had a vivoactive hr before that - also worked good.

Syncing gave probs a couple times and it was a server related issue on garmin or strava side

check status.strava.com to see if there is a known issue.

If not, unpair, and re-pair the device.
Unlink and re-link garmin and strava as well
