ALISHA CHUNU, the woman charged with extorting money from the husband of murdered businesswoman Vindra Naipaul-Coolman, was committed to stand trial at the High Court on Friday.
Chunu, of Rich Plain, Diego Martin, was granted $250,000 bail by Magistrate Melvin Daniel, with her father, Kimraj Chunu, accepting responsibility for her attendance at the High Court.
Chunu is charged with corruptly soliciting and obtaining money from Rennie Coolman on April 4 and 12, 2007, and obtaining by deception money from Coolman, by fraudulently representing herself as a State attorney on April 12, 2007.
The 35-year-old is also charged with intent to defraud when she attempted to obtain $20,000 from Coolman at Grand Bazaar, Valsayn, on April 19.
The State alleges that Chunu acquired the monies by pretending to be an attorney with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and claiming to know that Coolman could be charged with his wife's murder.
The charge also alleges that Chunu claimed that the police prepared a file on Coolman's involvement in the alleged kidnaping and murder and that attorney Israel Khan SC was to advise then DPP Geoffrey Henderson, now a High Court Judge, on whether Coolman should be charged. Chunu, according to the four charges, told Coolman she would pay the money to both Henderson and Khan, so they would not decide to charge him with his wife's murder.
When the matter was called the day before, the State closed its case after Special State prosecutor Evans Welch called the State's last witness, Republic Bank employee Clarissa Joseph.

THE killer or killers of Michael Derek Leinberg Piper hacked off his head while he was still alive.
An autopsy conducted at the Forensic Science yesterday stated that there were no bullet wounds to the body or stab wounds either and the cause of death was decapitation.
Piper’s head was found at Nelson Street, Port of Spain and his body, with hands and feet tied—in a nearby open lot around 6.15 a.m. on Monday.
