Arthur Hall, Senior Staff Reporter

THE JAMAICA Defence Force (JDF) has called out the National Reserve after thugs in west Kingston yesterday underscored their stated intention to defend the 'President' when they opened fire on a team of soldiers attempting to enter Denham Town.

The members of the National Reserve have been asked to report for duty at 1800 hours today (6 p.m.) and be prepared to go into action as tension rises in sections of the Corporate Area.

Since Monday, thugs have blocked most of the entrances and exits to Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town in what they claim is an effort to prevent the security forces from getting to Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, also called 'President'.

Coke is facing possible extradition to the United States.

The likely instability prompted National Security Minister Dwight Nelson to declare on Tuesday that the security forces are alert and equipped to take on any challenges at this time.

"The security forces are adequately resourced to deal with any form of intimidatory tactics being employed by criminals who are seeking to destabilise the country," Nelson said.

But yesterday, members of a JDF team in an armoured vehicle faced the full force of the criminals as they attempted to enter Denham Town from Hannah Street.

After the JDF team used the armoured vehicle to push through a blockade at the entrance to Denham Town, gunmen opened fire at them.

Residents and our photographer scampered for cover as the high-powered weapons barked metres away from the Kingston Public Hospital.

When the barrage of gunfire ended, the armoured vehicle was seen being hastily driven out of the community with indications that at least one of its massive tyres had been damaged.

It appeared that no one was injured in the shooting, but up to late yesterday there was no official word from the JDF.

The police said while they could confirm that the JDF team was attacked, they were unaware of any injuries.

In the meantime, the blockades remain across several streets in west Kingston.

The police have reported that some of the barricades in west Kingston have been reinforced by barbed wires attached to high voltage Jamaica Public Service electricity distribution lines.

According to the police, liquid petroleum gas cylinders have been inserted into the barricades and law-abiding citizens are being prevented from leaving Tivoli Gardens and have had their cellular phones confiscated by criminals.

Leave dudus alone

But even as the police claimed residents of Tivoli Gardens were being held against their will, some persons in the west Kingston community faced the media yesterday to urge the State to leave 'Dudus', who is wanted in the US to answer gunrunning and drugs charges.

"A Presi we seh, a no Bruce we seh," one woman told The Gleaner.

"We nah give up," shouted another woman as The Gleaner team passed where she was standing on Industrial Terrace close to the main entrance to Tivoli Gardens.

"Leave Dudus alone! Leave him alone because we a go dead fi him inna Garden, and we mek up wi min' fi dead fi him, woman and man and pickney. Him not going anywhere!" shouted another woman.

Elsewhere in downtown Kingston, most stores were open yesterday, but there was a noticeable reduction in the number of street-side vendors and shoppers.

Vehicular traffic was also reduced and policemen and women patrolling the streets appeared on edge with their firearms at the ready.

Last night, the Jamaica Labour Party issued a statement appealing for calm and restraint. The party said it noted with concern, and condemn, incidents that appear to be calculated to create fear and panic.

Meanwhile, the Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller is asking the prime minister to use his influence to diffuse the volatile situation in Tivoli Gardens and surrounding areas.

About the JDF Reserve

The Third Battalion the Jamaica Regiment, National Reserve (3JR NR), is a military organisation which consists of citizens of the country who combine a military career with a civilian career to support the JDF when called upon.

The Mission of 3JR (NR) is to always be ready to provide service to the country and promote nation building through the development of people. Such is driven by commitment, selflessness, volunteerism and the desire to serve.

In effecting its mission, 3JR (NR) has several roles and responsibilities which are tailored to suit the nation's needs. The unit's basic role, however, has always been to support the regular force in executing its duties.

Barbed wires, broken bottles and raw electrical wires are now being used by Tivoli residents as measures to keep out security forces from their community.

Thugs from west Kingston have transformed the area into a battleground and have also brought out their arms in preparation for any form of invasion by the security forces.

"A now yu waa si di place, yu eva watch some real war show and see how di place set up," one thug said. "Di place look like a real war zone, wi ready fi dem man."

Along with these items, there are truck tyres, pans, crates and old cars are some other items which the thugs are using to give them an advantage should there be a confrontation with whoever decides to go into the community to look for Dudus.

'wicked pon dem'

"Whole heap a truck tyre and bruk bottle and barbwire deh bout di place, di man dem a set up di place a way ... Di man dem all run electric wire cross some place so whoeva run inna dat yu done know wah reach dem," one thug said.

One known thug also spoke of some new, high powered guns which he has seen.

"Di man dem have some ting dung yah yu si, a show alone nuff people ago see dem gun deh inna..Some new ting mi a tell yu bout, di man dem naw play...Mek dem run in cause it ago wicked pon dem," the obviously excited character said while chuckling.

He also added; "Man a walk wid all two, three piece (guns). A so di man dem a step. Di man dem have out everything, rifle, handgun you name it..Rite ya now gun deh yah more than man fi fire dem."

When contacted by THE STAR, several high ranking officers from the Jamaica Constabulary Force declined to comment on the matter.

However one source from the Denham Town Police Station told THE STAR that the area is tense and it is expected that men from the community are taking up arms. The source however said the police did not have detailed information as to how the men were preparing.

"From the extradition issue first came up we have been hearing talks about them preparing, so hearing this now is not surprising... As for exactly what they are doing we could not say," the source said.

this is what happens when you pu$$yfoot with criminals for political gains, no different from the way local politicians appease them by giving URP contracts and pretty names like community leaders..note how much more emboldened criminals in T&T have become giving media interviews and making youtube vids, this is the future of our country as long as there is the lack of political will to do otherwise and I don't think we have any such politicians with the testicular fortitude to crush crime

The police from reports and the papers does not seem able to go into the community to execute an arrest.

In the beetham we have seen the police go into homes and the area.

This is the end result of what has been a total and otter embarrassment for the Jamaican Government/people.
It has brought out into the open, not only locally, but internationally, what everyone knew all along, the government has close ties to criminals.

this is a core cause for the crime situation today in Jamaica, in the 70's and 80's, politicians aligned themselves with gang leaders to bully votes from certain districts, financed them turned a blind eye, when de money stop flowing from the politicians, it was to late, it already had a developed crime network that simply switched to other activities for fiance.

So they basically created the beast and have not been able to contain it.

When de PM finally sign de extradition order, de police start to lock down Kingston, business all over de island start to close up early, because everyone was afraid of the retaliation.

All kinds of barricades across the city extending beyond TG now. The really frightening part is that they have linked up the wire on top of the barricades to the JPS high tension wires so if you try to move them, dead you dead unless JPS shut off dem lights.

The criminals have also inserted gas cylinders in the barricades - all dis now on RJR news.

seach Donald Coke and the Shower Posse

Tivoli has been a strong hold of the JLP for more than 30 years , not a outsider friendly area , even for Jamaicans , put it this way Jamaica is a large island and this episode has the possibility of spilling over from West Kingston to other areas. Golding has a lot to do here

This ting really outta hand. Imagine you stop at a traffic light and you seeing an armoured human transport in your rearview. I attend school at the hospital in kingston and all my classes have been cancelled until they get this fella in custody and the place is safe (relatively) again.

The gunmen, in a real act of nobility, have warned the police that they will be using women and children as shields if they attempt to enter Tivoli and capture Dudus. At least they sent a warning yes, i give them dat.

This place need a hand yes.

http://go-jamaica.com/news/read_article.php?id=19466

The Jamaica Police High Command is reporting that they have uncovered some very sinister plans by gunmen in Tivoli Gardens who are seeking to block the security forces from entering the community.

“Gunmen are now placing tires atop the roof of several high-rise buildings in Tivoli Gardens and are also storing gasoline nearby,” said the police.

The police believe the intention is to start massive fires on top of these buildings to ward off helicopters.

However, in an attempt at a peaceful resolution, the Police High Command says it has written to a number of attorneys who they believe to be part of Mr Coke’s defense team.

The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre understands that in those letters the Police have proposed that Mr Coke turn himself in on the condition that bail will be granted.

Mr Coke is wanted in the United States on guns and drugs charges.

Tensions have been mounting in his Tivoli Gardens base since Monday when Attorney General Dorothy Lightbourne signed off on the United States request for his extradition.

Shortly after the extradition request was signed, Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Paula Llewellyn secured an arrest warrant which was handed over to the police on Tuesday.

Since then several roads in the community have been blocked by residents who are trying to bar the police from entering.
