The Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries said a jaguar that had been captured by officials last week is being quarantined at the Emperor Valley Zoo.
The Ministry issued an update Monday night after claims that a 'large cat' had been spotted in South Trinidad.
"The Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries (MALF) is aware of a video circulating on social media on the reported sighting of an exotic animal in South Trinidad."
"Currently, the Forestry Division of MALF cannot confirm the veracity of the claims made in the report, however our officers remain on the ground, vigilant and ready to respond once received reports are confirmed."
The Ministry has asked that the public desist from sharing the video and its unsubstantiated claims, as it will fuel panic.
Minister Kazim Hosein and Conservator of Forests Denny Dipchnsingh visited a juvenile jaguar that had been captured and was being quarantined at the Zoo.
