desktop virtualization solutions

Postby acesinghit » March 22nd, 2011, 11:13 am

Tech Guys,

I have some questions and I know tuner have alot of key people in the tech industry browsing these forums so here goes:

We need a virtualization solution for phase 1 of a project encompassing over 300 HP desktop PC's

We are not exactly sure as to which company in T&T provides this solution so any help would be appreciated:

- How much virtualized machines (clients) can run from the host server?
- What type of server is needed to procure such a large deployment with inevitable expansion for hundreds more?
- What type of network bandwidth is required (fibre?) to facilitate this move?
- Would the client users get improved audio/video and application requests as well as web browsing capability?
- With the removal of the conventional tower, what about if we have disc or flash media to plug into a USB port? Would the virtualization device firmware recognize external media (HDD etc?)
- Has anyone switched to virtualization yet and confirmed that the units have zero noise and heat emissions?
- Has anyone confirmed that virtualization reduces energy consumption?

These are just the few questions I have for now, thanks.

We are using Citrix XenApp / Xen Desktop bundled over VMware

We got the Citrix through Diamond Sys

and VMware through TSL

We are not exactly sure as to which company in T&T provides this solution so any help would be appreciated:

- How much virtualized machines (clients) can run from the host server? Depends on your host hardware specs. Spec out some insane blades and you will be more than happy.
- What type of server is needed to procure such a large deployment with inevitable expansion for hundreds more? Go virtual , Blade Chasis with expansion slots, Blades
- What type of network bandwidth is required (fibre?) to facilitate this move? The faster the better!
- Would the client users get improved audio/video and application requests as well as web browsing capability? Well if you upgrade you backbone infrastructure i think it would be obviousd network bandwidth capability would increase
- With the removal of the conventional tower, what about if we have disc or flash media to plug into a USB port? Would the virtualization device firmware recognize external media (HDD etc?) You can run VDI's on "fat clients" ie your normal desktop , or thin clients (which have usb ports etc), or zero clients like you VOIP phone , i think cisco has a zero client ip phone
- Has anyone switched to virtualization yet and confirmed that the units have zero noise and heat emissions? We are in the process , but from our tests with thin clients the noise is less than the conventional fat clients.
- Has anyone confirmed that virtualization reduces energy consumption? smaller footprint = less engery

These are just the few questions I have for now, thanks.

I see from your avatar u working in the GOV, which min???

TSL is having their 2011 Tech Expo the middle of next month.

Microsoft, Citrix, VMware will all be there and they gonna have some info sessions about Virtualization, VDI and streaming apps etc etc.

IBM and HP will also be there if your looking for info on Blades and storage.

You should check it out and talk directly to some of the reps.

use rack based servers you'll need extra nics for vmotion, HD, management and ypu might want to consider iSCSI SAN. I'd say VMware 1st - but ists expensive Hyper V is cheaper but I don't see it happening in Trinidad now.
