Woman stabs pupil in eye
Alert cop makes arrest

The parent of a pupil attending the Diego Martin Secondary School was arrested by police yesterday after she stabbed another pupil of the same school in her eye with a pencil.

The incident, police said, occurred outside the school's compound at St Lucien Road, Diego Martin, around 1.20 p.m.

Police said up to late yesterday, the pencil was lodged in the left eye of Naylean Sharp, a 17-year-old pupil of the school.

Sharp, police said, was first beaten on the head with a piece of iron by the suspect.

Police said Sharp and another pupil were involved in an altercation outside the school's compound when the woman intervened.

The woman struck Sharp with a piece of iron on the head before stabbing her in the left eye with a pencil.

Acting Cpl Adams of the Western Division who was at the school at the time of the incident, followed a maxi-taxi in which the suspect had fled the scene and intercepted the vehicle at the corner of Quarry Street and the Diego Martin Main Road.

The officer ordered the driver to take the vehicle to the West End Police Station where the suspect was taken into custody by police and up to late last evening was being interviewed by police.

Officers said they were told by doctors that Sharp may lose her left eye.

Sgt Harford of the West End Police Station is probing the incident.

Police said upon impact, the wooden pencil broke leaving a piece of the pencil imbedded in the socket of the left eye.

Investigators said both teenagers were involved in violent fights with each other in the past few months.

If for example, the victim was a 'bully' who was terrorizing the stabber's child would people be as sympathetic?
