Has anyone ever reupholstered a steering wheel before or know of any upholsterers that can perform this task?

I recently purchased a vehicle and the steering wheel (MOMO Brand) has probably seen better days, the upholstering is dilapidated including the foam material underneath it. I am considering the option of having it reupholstered, if it can be done cheaper than purchasing a new/foreign used steering wheel.

I left a leather steering wheel and shifter to reupholster at Sonah's in Montrose.
They didn't reupholster the wheel, but made a custom steering wheel cover, which looks pretty decent. I also considered leather repair kits, etc, but they did the both things for $300 within a day.

What do you use to protect the leather? I applied Mother's Leather Conditioner to my steering wheel to help protect it.. but that makes it slightly slippery and you always end up with the conditioner on your hands after a drive.. It will eventually soak in / dry out after a few days though.

I tried this, finished spraying on the klear coat last night. This system works very well. Did it on the leather steering wheel of a Prado without removing the steering wheel. the kit is US$25.00 plus shipping. The products are copolymer based so cleanup is easy with water.
Simple four step process, five steps if you need to fill indentations.
Step 1. apply leather conditioner liberally and leave over night. The conditioner is not included in the kit so you can oder it seperately or just use mother's conditioner.
Step 2. Apply prep liquid with brush or spray bottle, lightly sand with fine sand paper dipped the the liquid, apply some more prep liquid and wipe clean to repove dirt and oil and leave over night to dry. At this stage if there are areas that need filling, you apply crack filler (sold seperately), let it dry for about 15 mins and then sand as above.
Step 3. Spray on or brush on the dye. I used black but there are many colours to choose from. Let dry over night.
Step 4. Spray on or brush on the Klear coat. It will be touch dry in 20 mins. Let dry for 48 hour to fully cure.

I will post some pictures later this evening. The results are great. Thanks Silent_riot for posting the link to this product. I also intend to use this system to repair the warn leather areas on the two front seat.

Most upholsterers I contacted said they don't do it as a solo job because it's plenty work. If you doing over seats or some other big work, they might consider it.

Hosein's in Elsocorro did a Mercedes wheel for me. Real leather and the x stitching was perfect. He cut the strip first, hemmed the two sides, put it on like a cover then pulled it together and x'ed it. It looked just like original.

depending on the amount of damage on the steering wheel it would make more sense to buy a foreign used one and get it covered with leather or hydrodipped. if the foam is eroding it may not make sense to try and repair it. this is especially if its a common car like a b14 or nze as replacement steering wheels are not too expensive
