Bringing it out from standby is done in a split second though so no lame start-up time. If you area starting up from scratch cater for about 90 seconds to 2 minutes.
Battery life is pretty good, I havent checked to see if you get 10 hours continious as they boasted but I spent quite a lot of time on it & the battery life just began to drop to around 50%.
I dont like how the back of it gets hot, it feels kinda uncomfortable. When used in an a/c environment it not that noticeable.
Camera wise, there is no setting to allow you to take pics close up, no flash to take pics in the dark & in a room illuminated by a single fluorescent bulb I find some of the pics to be a bit grainy. Picture quality seems to be good enough to take pics from a few feet away in a well illuminated room though (eg you want to take a pic of a slide on a projected unto a board during a presentation).
No app to allow direct handwriting to be converted into text for microsoft word or any other document yet (at least none that I know of).
Word & excel doc's work smooth, no problems reading & editing so far. Editing excel sheets is easy once you know formulas off the top of your head, if not google ftw.
I think blackberry has some blue-box thingy that allows you to store up to 5gb of info. I simply email myself documents or upload it to my shared folder & replace the current ones there. That way I am not restricted to access from any one computer or storage device. As long as I have access to the net I dl, edit & replace. No need for a flash drive so far.
PB screen is cleaner than the ipad (so so they say, I never did a side by side comparison but it is very clean, the demo vid is sweet) & it supports flash.
Imo if you sung it for the basics as you listed, it will work fine. Apple has more apps though (or so I heard).

BlackBerry PlayBook gains root with DingleBerry
The BlackBerry PlayBook has just become the first rooted BlackBerry device, and developers xpvqus, neuralic, and cmwdotme are preparing to release their rooting tool, dubbed DingleBerry. Neuralic can be seen below demonstrating control over the backlight and other system features, and has shown the device running Hulu in another video.
The video shows the PlayBook running BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.8, but neuralic claims the root also works on the 2.0 beta, and that rooting the beta allows access to the Android Market. Rooting persists after the device is rebooted. Besides giving users access to new features, this could mark the first step towards getting the PlayBook to run a custom OS, making the PlayBook more attractive to people who agreed with our assessment of the current software.

The green line shows Apple's stock performance and the red, RIM's.
There's usually something pretty wrong with a company when it's stock price behaves as RIM's.
RIM as a company isn't doing well and as such I wouldn't buy anything from the Blackberry maker, whose future seems uncertain.
Just adding a different perspective to the debate.

That's actually what's been holding me off from buying another BB to replace my current phone, and I'm not sure RIM is going to recover either
