I hope Marussia beats Caterham and Torro Rosso. They are supposed to have KERS this year and they have technical assistance from McLaren.

Saw Wolff leave williams to join Mercedes. Poor Frank, that was like having the heir to the throne leave. You would always see him in the garage in place of Frank.

With all these high profile personnel on board, I really hope Mercedes win at least one race this season - or they are going to look like the biggest idiots in the paddock. I really hope they don't become the next Toyota, especially for Mr. Hamilton's sake.

Pirelli unveil 2013 F1® tyre range 23 Jan 2013 Formula One tyre suppliers Pirelli have unveiled what they describe as a ‘revolutionised’ new range of tyres for the 2013 season, with the aim of producing more pit stops and increasing overtaking.

Both the dry and wet-weather tyre ranges have been revised with compounds becoming softer, the structure of the tyres more flexible and the shoulder of the tyres reinforced.

The Italian manufacturer has said that the object of these changes was to improve performance and to increase thermal degradation in order to ensure at least two pit stops per car, per race and to open up more strategic options for the teams.

“The 2013 season continues the philosophy adopted by Pirelli last year in evolving the original 2011 range of Formula One tyres,” explained Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery. “The goal is to continuously set new challenges for the drivers and to ensure that all the teams start the new season on a level playing field when it comes to the tyres.

“Through accumulating more information with each Grand Prix last year, the teams eventually fully understood the tyres, after a spectacular start with seven winners from the first seven races. The result at the end of the year was races with less competition and sometimes only one pit stop.

"This phenomenon was also observed in 2011, disappointing many fans and prompting some of the teams to ask us to continue developing our tyres further this year, in order to provide a fresh challenge with something different. Our 2013 range of tyres mixes up the cards once more to help overtaking and ensure two to three pit stops per race.”

The softer compounds mean that the new hard tyre is roughly equivalent to last year’s medium compound. Pirelli are anticipating lap times to be around 0.5 seconds faster than in 2012 as a result, with tyres also reaching peak operating temperature quicker and providing better traction than their predecessors.

Pirelli also say that the combination of softer sidewalls and a stronger shoulder to the tyre will speed up thermal degradation while extending the tyre’s peak performance window. Subsequently, the performance gap between the different compounds is now anticipated to be in excess of 0.5 seconds per lap, as opposed to last year when the difference was often smaller, particularly in the latter half of the season.

Visually, the tyre markings used to denote the different tyres are the same as in 2012, with the notable exception of the hard-compound tyre which, for 2013, will bear vivid orange markings instead of silver.

As before, each Formula One car will have 11 sets of tyres available for the weekend, made up of six sets of the harder and five sets of the softer compound. Each tyre has a barcode embedded into its sidewall before the vulcanization process, which effectively acts as the tyre’s ‘passport’, allowing Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, to keep track of which tyres have been used.

Unveiling their 2013 F1 tyre range in Milan in Italy on Wednesday, Pirelli also revealed former F1 driver Jean Alesi as a brand ambassador and announced that they will reward the winner of this year's GP2 Series with a Formula One test session.

Well most if not all the car's have already been launched, and testing is already underway.

cars look good this year too, no more stupid stepped nose.

The Sauber C32 looks particularly stunnning imo! Hope they win some races this year.

Hamilton and Perez both get new lids this season too. I'd really like to see where the Mclarens are in Comparison to Mercedes pre season.

for the hardcore people, ted does a great job of explaining the tiny new details on most of the F1 cars this season. It never ceases to amaze me how much attention is paid to the tiniest detail, or how creative some of the parts on this care are. wow.

action from 7:10, if you could stay awake during it :P

The plot thickens...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/feb/26/mclaren-paddy-lowe-mercedes
The guardian wrote:McLaren have denied they could have stopped their technical director, Paddy Lowe, following Lewis Hamilton to join a reshaped Mercedes team at Brackley. Lowe, one of the highest-rated designers in Formula One, will see out his current contract at Woking before moving to the German team at the end of the year.

However when McLaren's managing director, Jonathan Neale, was asked if he could have prevented the move, he said: "Slavery was abolished a long period of time ago. It's really difficult to indenture somebody.

"Even if you've got what you think is a water-tight contract, the reality of the situation is that if somebody rolls up on Monday and says: 'I don't like being here, I don't like the cut of your jib, you're not paying me enough money' or whatever, then you don't want them in the team anyway. So I don't look upon this as a management slip-up."

Instead, Neale hinted that McLaren had been flattered by the attentions of Mercedes when he said: "I'm not surprised people are coming through this team at the moment, prepared to pay exotic salaries for people and wait 12, 18 months or longer in some cases. That is the state of the market at the moment. It would be disappointing if we weren't regarded as the place to come to hire good people from because then I wouldn't be doing my job.

"If you want to buy some short-term know-how then you can go out and pay telephone-number salaries. We've all done it."

Instead, the clear message from Neale and Jenson Button was "the technical director is dead, long live the technical director".

Button said of Lowe's successor: "Having Tim Goss in the position is fantastic. He is the guy who designed the 2012 car that won seven races last year so he knows what he's doing."

Of Lowe, who has been removed from F1 duties and will work on an unspecified project as he sees out his gardening leave, Button added: "I really like Paddy. It's been good fun working with him over the past three years, in a working relationship but also as a friend. He's a good guy, a fun character. But things change and he wants to try a new challenge and fair play to him. He's got to think about No1, which is himself, and good luck to him.

"But I didn't come here because Paddy or Lewis was here. I came here because this is McLaren, the heritage is here, the history is here. The words we always use are 'strength in depth'. It's not down to one individual. It's the full team. Paddy leaving is part of the sport. People move round. But this team will succeed in the future, with or without Paddy."

Last year Button had said: "I'd be disappointed if Paddy moved from the team because that's the guy who's going to help me achieve in the future." But while losing Lowe is an undoubted blow, McLaren are unlikely to be spooked by the defection, simply because of the depth of their engineering resources.

Neale added: "It would be foolish to say we're not going to miss Paddy, who has been with us 19 years. But we have designed an organisation that is broad at the top. We've got a resilient team. Tim is a seasoned professional."

Neale also expects big things from Hamilton's replacement driver, Sergio Pérez. He said: "Sergio knows that we expect him to race hard and not be content to park two grid places behind Jenson.

"That's not what we hired him for. He's adapted to the car very well. I expect him to be trading places with Jenson. We wouldn't have put him in the car if we didn't think that."

The new Formula One season gets under way in Melbourne on 17 March.

I swear, Mercedes are building up an all star cast of sorts (Brawn, Toto, Lauda, and now Lowe). They are gambling big BIG time on that 2014 season with the turbo v6s. If they get their act together and deliver at least a competitive car to Hamilton - barring any drama that we've seen in recent years - I will be willing to put money down that Hamilton will at least equal the spoils Vettel's had with Red Bull.

Re: ***The Official 2013 Formula 1 season thread***

Postby janfar » February 27th, 2013, 9:39 pm

The new season is almost upon us. In fact, there’s just one more four-day test between now and next month’s season-opening 2013 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. That test begins in Barcelona, Spain on Thursday. As the teams prepare for the final push of on-track development work, we review how they fared during last week’s four-day session at the Circuit de Catalunya - a session that saw McLaren newcomer Sergio Perez top the aggregate timesheet…

McLaren
Sergio Perez, 1st: 1:21.848, 174 laps
Jenson Button, 11th: 1:22.840, 141 laps
Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez again showed no signs of difficulty in adapting to his new team environment, as he gave McLaren the fastest overall time last week in Barcelona. Other than that it was a typically low-key but solid test from the Woking squad, with no major technical problems reported and an air of quiet confidence building around the MP4-28, even if - as Jenson Button admitted - it has been tricky to understand at times.

Ferrari
Fernando Alonso, 2nd: 1:21.875, 283 laps
Felipe Massa, 22nd: 1:27.563, 80 laps
After opting to miss the first Jerez test, Fernando Alonso got his first taste of the F138 in Barcelona, and his lap times - he was fastest on the third of his three days in the car - confirmed that Ferrari are in a far better place than this time last year, even if they admit there is still work to do, notably surrounding the exhausts. Massa’s time - set amid mixed track conditions in his single day at the wheel - was not representative.

Sauber
Nico Hulkenberg, 3rd: 1:22.160, 179 laps
Esteban Gutierrez, 18th: 1:25.124, 129 laps
Some small mechanical niggles aside, Sauber had another productive test last week and Hulkenberg’s third place in the aggregate timesheets suggested the C32, with its much-talked-about narrow sidepods, may just have the pace to match its pretty looks. Rookie Gutierrez struggled with tyre degradation on his only full day of dry running, but nonetheless notched up another 129 laps of valuable, pre-season mileage.

Lotus
Romain Grosjean, 4th: 1:22.188, 160 laps
Kimi Raikkonen, 7th: 1:22.623, 87 laps
Many are tipping Lotus to be an even greater threat to the ‘big three’ in 2013. They have experienced a few data-logging issues in testing, but other than that their reliability looks strong and they’ve been consistently quick. Grosjean also ran a trouble-free full race simulation in Barcelona. Like many other teams, Lotus plan to bring several updates to the final test which could boost pace further.

Red Bull
Sebastian Vettel, 5th: 1:22.197, 150 laps
Mark Webber, 13th: 1:23.024, 172 laps
The F1 press core has learnt from experience never to judge Red Bull based on pre-season testing form, and as usual Christian Horner’s men were giving little away last week. Some small reliability issues early on were quickly ironed out, but even then there was little sign of the team showing their true hand just yet. The only certainty? The RB9 isn’t slow.

Mercedes
Nico Rosberg, 6th: 1:22.611, 162 laps
Lewis Hamilton, 9th: 1:22.726, 173 laps
After their distinctly mixed fortunes at the opening Jerez test, Mercedes’ first Barcelona session was far more promising. Rosberg was visibly upbeat after clocking the fastest time of day one, even if new team Hamilton - the man with experience of a championship-winning car - was somewhat more circumspect after leading the way on the final day. Ross Brawn’s analysis remains that his team have taken a significant step forward since 2012.

Williams
Pastor Maldonado, 8th: 1:22.675, 178 laps
Valtteri Bottas, 10th: 1:22.826, 189 laps
Williams’ decision to buck the trend and wait until the second test to launch their 2013 machine looked to be a wise one after the FW35 proved trouble-free and fast in the hands of Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas. The team could hardly have been happier with their new car’s debut, and with reliability proven they head to the final test able to concentrate on performance.

Force India
Adrian Sutil, 12th: 1:22.877, 78 laps
Paul di Resta, 16th: 1:23.971, 144 laps
Jules Bianchi, 19th: 1:25.732, 96 laps
For the media at least, Force India’s first Barcelona session was all about the drivers rather than the car, as the team’s former racer (Sutil) went head to head with their 2012 reserve (Bianchi) in pursuit of their final 2013 race seat. Sutil showed no sign of having been out of an F1 car for almost 15 months, while Bianchi acquitted himself well in some trying and changeable weather conditions. The VJM06 looks in pretty good shape ahead of the final test, but all anyone wants to know is who will be Di Resta’s team mate this season.

Toro Rosso
Jean-Eric Vergne, 14th: 1:23.366, 186 laps
Daniel Ricciardo, 15th: 1:23.718, 143 laps
Two tests down and Toro Rosso say the STR8 is reliable and shows potential. The only thing that seems clear from the timesheets, however, is that Vergne and Ricciardo are as closely matched as ever and the team at least remain a clear step ahead of backmarkers Caterham and Marussia. As to whether they’ll be mixing it with their traditional midfield rivals or moving further up the grid, only time will tell.

Marussia
Max Chilton, 17th: 1:25.115, 241 laps
Marussia - newly equipped with KERS for 2013 - had the edge over Caterham in Barcelona. It fell to Chilton to complete all the mileage, after recently-confirmed team mate Luiz Razia was dropped from the test line-up, the team citing a need for driver consistency after the stop-start nature of their early running.

Caterham
Giedo van der Garde, 20th: 1:26.177, 133 laps
Charles Pic, 21st: 1:26.243, 151 laps
Like all the teams, Caterham insisted they weren’t chasing lap times, but there’s no doubt they would have preferred to see some slightly quicker figures staring back at them from the timing screens. On the plus side, reliability was generally good and new boy Van der Garde acquitted himself well relative to the more experienced Pic.

Unofficial aggregate test times from Barcelona:
1. Sergio Perez, McLaren, 1:21.848, 174 laps
2. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, 1:21.875, 283 laps
3. Nico Hulkenberg, Sauber, 1:22.160, 179 laps
4. Romain Grosjean, Lotus, 1:22.188, 160 laps
5. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, 1:22.197, 150 laps
6. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, 1:22.611, 162 laps
7. Kimi Raikkonen, Lotus, 1:22.623, 87 laps
8. Pastor Maldonado, Williams, 1:22.675, 178 laps
9. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, 1:22.726, 173 laps
10. Valtteri Bottas, Williams, 1:22.826, 189 laps
11. Jenson Button, McLaren, 1:22.840, 141 laps
12. Adrian Sutil, Force India, 1:22.877, 78 laps
13. Mark Webber, Red Bull, 1:23.024, 172 laps
14. Jean-Eric Vergne, Toro Rosso, 1:23.366, 186 laps
15. Daniel Ricciardo, Toro Rosso, 1:23.718, 143 laps
16. Paul di Resta, Force India, 1:23.971, 144 laps
17. Max Chilton, Marussia, 1:25.115, 241 laps
18. Esteban Gutierrez, Sauber, 1:25.124, 129 laps
19. Jules Bianchi, Force India, 1:25.732, 96 laps
20. Giedo van der Garde, Caterham, 1:26.177, 133 laps
21. Charles Pic, Caterham, 1:26.243, 151 laps
22. Felipe Massa, Ferrari, 1:27.563, 80 laps

^ I don't bother with live broadcasts anymore, no market for that in the caribbean so the cable companies won't bother - and if they do, the broadcast ends up being sheit/sub par/commercial laden.

Went through the phase with watching it on speed and their sometimeish coverage - ignorance is bliss. BBC/Sky coverage is by far the best, where you actually have people who know what they're talking about (Brundle, Coulthard, Jordan, Davidson, Humphrey) on site etc etc.

ANYHOW, you could probably try torrenting the race build-up, race, post race shows from various torrent sites - although that might not be as consistent as one would like, and you would need some discipline to not check who's winning etc. I get mine from a private site about an hour after everything has ended. you could try thebox.bz, but registration there is kinda tough.

If you have a job/income though, you could try the more legit stuff here http://www1.skysports.com/formula1/racecontrol/, and I think BBC has live streaming as well, not sure how to work it though, but if you do, trust me - it's worth it.

for the past few seasons, experience has taught that watching the race build-up/race/post race analysis adds many more dimensions to the sport. if you just watch the race on sunday you're missing out big time, you would probably get more of a thrill watching GP2.
