3rd National Fruit Festival 2014 (20-22 June 2014)

3rd National Fruit Festival is coming up. Save the date!

The Tableland Pineapple Farmers Association (TPFA) will be hosting the 3rd National Fruit Festival 2014 “Win with Local Fruits” from the 20th to 22nd June 2014 at the Nu Image Simplex Complex, New Grant. All stakeholders including Ministries, State Agencies, farmers, agro-processors, SMEs; everyone along the value chain is encouraged to participate.

Who are we?

The TPFA is a farmers’ association which was formalized in 2004 in response to the challenges that face pineapple and all farmers in T&T; but which existed as a lobby group for over a decade prior to 2004. Our members are responsible for over 80% of pineapple production in T&T. We also produce papaya, cassava, mango, pommecythere, plantain, hot pepper and a host of other fruits. The TPFA has been an advocate for the development of the pineapple industry and for increased consumption of fruits altogether. Currently production, sales, and consumption of locally grown fruits are relatively low. In response, an increase in public education and awareness efforts targeting consumers is necessary in order to bolster the fruit industry.

The main roles of the TPFA is to help farmers and home-gardeners: network with the Ministry of Food Production and affiliated State agencies to have a coordinated and meaningful impact on the local agriculture sector; grow organic food, fiber and other crops; protect the environment; recycle natural resources; increase local food production; support rural communities; and illuminate, for consumers, the connection between healthy and responsibly-grown food, environmentally-sound farming practices, and the socio-economic consequences of food demand and consumption.

What do we want to achieve?

The TPFA is willing to support collaboration within the agricultural community to identify and create a food system that is not only safe, but also allows farmers to meet the demand for local foods without excessive Government regulation and expenditure. This position is intended to demonstrate that our farmers are committed to providing safe and affordable food and nutrition security in T&T.

Why do we have this passion?

Supporting local food production has been one of TPFA’s priorities since we were formally established in 2004. We are committed to educational opportunities for farmers and the public in the areas of organic and sustainable farming systems as well as in the adoption and use of safe new, innovative and emerging technologies in food and agriculture. We believe that public education and awareness, especially for the nation’s youth, on the importance of consuming and supporting local agricultural output is a useful strategy. Farmers need assistance in expanding their markets and marketing, and so, food safety training and other issues should become part of basic educational programmes in agriculture.

Importantly, Government support should be made available to private and non-profit sectors to maintain and expand consumer education on food safety, oversight for food safety, and potential risks associated with the manner in which food is processed before sale. There is also the imperative to reduce our TT$ 4billion per year food import bill; alternatively, to “eat what we grow and grow what we eat.” Consumer education is a public good that helps consumers make informed choices about their food and nutrition intake.

What is the National Fruit Festival?

In commemorating our country’s 50th Anniversary of Independence, the TPFA hosted its first Fruit Festival on the 15th and 16th of June, 2012. This event was a great success with the theme “Win with Fruits” creating vast public interest. Senator Vasant Bharath proposed that it should be a National Fruit Festival for the year 2013 and beyond. Throughout this 3-day event, there will be an exhibition which is comprised of: presentations from various farmers’ groups, agro-processors, input suppliers and other institutional stakeholders; educational booths with information and literature about fruits and extension agriculture; sale and sampling of food, fruits, vegetables, including an array of plants. Other activities scheduled to take place are targeted lecture series, displays of rare and exotic fruits, agricultural estate tours, and a play area for kids. A variety of competitions will be held including most innovative fruit dish, best fruit display, best chow, and best fruit carving.

Summarily, the 3rd National Fruit Festival is an exciting event designed by the farming community for T&T in a family-centered learning environment.

It is not a market... It is a local fruit exhibition. While some farmers/vendors from the area might have some fruits to sell on the day, that is not the purpose of the event. It is an agricultural event and at last year's event there were companies giving away seedlings, fertilized soil, etc. There were also samples by juice and snack companies, in addition to food, drinks, snacks and ice-cream on sale by members of the community.

Thanks for the feedback. We invited as well as asked the Ministry of Food Production to invite their stakeholder groups throughout Trinidad and Tobago to attend and participate.

The Nu Image Simplex Complex is the home of the National Fruit Festival. This year its going to another level by introducing agro-eco-tourism...

Yes :!:
There will be multiple sellers of fruits, vegetables, plants, niche market products, local chocolate etc This is in addition to sampling from companies like Divino Brands Limited, Fruta and Caribbean Cool. Lunches and refreshments will also be on sale.

We have also invited the Network of Rural Women Producers to participate.

The main objective of the 3rd National Fruit Festival is to educate all households, especially children, about the nutritional value of over 100 local and exotic fruits, and to encourage all to put them daily on our tables. This is parallel to offering the distinct opportunity to plant, harvest, add-value, sample, and even tour the surrounding fruit and agricultural estates. This holistic collection of activities related to what, and how we eat, would demonstrate the necessity for us to adopt healthy lifestyles in T&T given the increase in diabetes, cancer, obesity and other non-communicable diseases; as well as to highlight the capacity of the local food sector to serve the nation as compared to supporting a massive TT$ 4billion per year food import bill.

The wider world is supporting their farmers and agriculture sectors. Owen Paterson said that shoppers should buy more British fruit and vegetables to boost the economy. He was pointing out that much of UK food is imported despite "top-class" production on home soil. What is our position in Trinidad and Tobago? We can't grow apples and grapes, but [/b]we can encourage T&T consumers and food businesses to buy pineapples, mangoes, and other local fruits and vegetables.[/b]

Research from organisations such as the Children’s Food Trust shows that improving our children’s diet now, and for the rest of their lives, means teaching them about food and giving them the skills they need to cook healthy meals from scratch. Food literacy helps children to make better food choices and reflect on their choices’ ecological and social implications.

The desired impact can be achieved by showing the importance of choosing nutritious, responsibly grown food; agro-eco-tourism; agriculture in schools; as well as classroom sessions held by farmers and practitioners to discuss issues of where food comes from, how it is grown and how it came to them.

Evidently, there is much work to be done with respect to food and nutrition security in Trinidad and Tobago.

Government’s Commitment to Respect Agriculture, Farmers, and the Land

A 2006 FAO report pointed to the fact that appropriate policy and financial support can possibly solve the problem of food production and significantly increase food security in Trinidad and Tobago. This is the point of departure which the Tableland Pineapple Farmers Association (TPFA) and other similar associations return to when drawing on the strengths and commitments of the People’s Manifesto (2010) which was translated into Government policy in the Medium Term Policy Framework (2011 – 2014).

“Increased food production and food security will decrease our food import bill and lower the price of food, while at the same time increasing prosperity for our farmers and providing sustainable livelihoods for more workers.”- People’s Manifesto (2010)

In addition to the Pillars of Development for Agriculture, the Government proposed to: review all programmes targeted at poverty alleviation and social support in order to strengthen synergy, reach and impact through rationalisation and integration as well as help households to step up to prosperity and to reduce the number of people classified as poor by 2% each year; link food and nutrition strategies, and health strategies to human development strategies through the school system; foster a multi-sectoral approach to agricultural development such as agriculture/tourism, agriculture/culture; where necessary to propel the sector, the State will partner with the private sector in strategic areas, similar to the approach taken in energy; strengthen institutional marketing to support farmers for domestic and international penetration; work with the tertiary education sector to strengthen curriculum to provide trained human resources in areas such as technology, harvesting techniques, farm management, agro-processing, agro-entrepreneurship; implement a zero waste policy where the by-products from agro-processing can be used as a feed stock for farmers; and design and implement a package of incentives to encourage value-added beyond primary production.

Importantly, and in keeping with the spirit of partnership; implement an effective trade regime, requiring strategic linkages amongst relevant ministries such as the Ministries of Trade, Agriculture, Tourism, Energy and Foreign Affairs through their trade delegations and foreign missions and the private sector.

Farmers’ Response

The People’s Partnership Government’s commitment to the agricultural sector and its stakeholders is overwhelming; a commitment which certainly points to an equal involvement with respect for the voices of minorities. The National Fruit Festival is only one mechanism through which much of these commitments could be achieved.

The scope of the Festival extends significantly beyond providing a market for fruits and vegetables; but an opportunity to link agriculture and rural communities directly into Government’s mainstream planning and priority areas.

The TPFA has therefore invited the participation of the Ministry of Food Production, Ministry of Land and Marine Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Community Development, Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development, Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Ministry of the People and Social Development, Ministry of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development, Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investments and Communications, Ministry of Finance and the Economy, Ministry of National Security, Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development, State agencies, farmers, processors, and private sector.

The 3rd National Fruit Festival can be used as a benchmark to assess the importance of integrating agriculture and food security into our national agenda. The involvement of these Ministries to showcase their successes and services while linking into the agriculture sector and rural economy, by extension, is critical in propelling development in Trinidad and Tobago.

The 3rd National Fruit Festival is therefore an exciting event designed by the farming community for T&T in a family-centered learning environment.

This. When I attended it was due to the institution I was with at the time, other than that its too tedious for me to make that journey from the northeast worse yet on a holiday weekend

This was part of the proposal but the farmers' association doesn't have such a budget. There is minimal Government funding support to fulfill that wish.
