Yeah like it’s either a big problem or a delay tactic.

Last year was the same thing. IMO delay tactic. Better to file early if possible.

This. The government should be grateful the people actually file at all .

If the government owes you, all well and good and you can file by October if you chose not to file in April (grace period but I can be corrected on this). If you owe them, try filing late and see the assessment notice you will get.

The instructions state (this is for 2014 and it has not changed much since then): http://www.ird.gov.tt/Media/Default/IRD ... --2014.pdf

PAYMENT O F INCOME TAX, BUSINESS LEVY AND
HEALTH SURCHARGE
8. (a) Every person in receipt of income other than “emolument
income”, is required to pay to the Board of Inland Revenue on or
before 31st March, 30th June, 30th September and 31st December, in each
year of income, an amount equal to one-quarter of the tax as calculated by
him on his chargeable income for the preceding year of income, and the
balance if any, not later than 30th April of the following year

9. (a) Quarterly installments unpaid by due date shall attract interest
at the rate of 20% per annum from the date following the end of the quarter
to 30th April or to the date of payment whichever is earlier.

(b) Payment of any balance of Income Tax, Business Levy and
Health Surcharge must be made by 30th April of the year following the year
of income. Any balance unpaid by 30th April will attract interest at the rate
of 20% per annum effective 1st May of the year following the year of
income.

Technically anything older than 6 years is statute barred. I.e. anything older than 2012. For payments you technically are not obliged to pay unless they have an audit underway. I am not sure how they treat with refunds to ppl who wish to file stuff older than 2012.

Yeah that's my issue, because i would like to file...and the Amnesty clearly states ANY period for filling...I Found 2009 tax return form online so ill attempt to file it when the amnesty comes into effect.

Question

Trinidadians working abroad but salary is remitted locally. What tax implications are there if any. Should one still fill a return?

I know that in the US, though not living there, some are still obligated to pay taxes.

Would love to not have to take a trip to the BIR office.

All earning sent back here are subject to tax if it wasn't taxed at source and a treaty is not in place.

No treaty but was taxed at source. However, paid by employer. It this was you speak of? "The resident individual is subject to tax on his world income."

Filed 2016 and 2017 in October 2018. Yet to get an update on the status of either.

Just completed my 2018 return online.
My 2017 and 2016 returns which were done in October last year still haven't been processed as yet. :(

Anyone else experiencing such a delay??

Not me, I got my refunds in about a month's time I believe. Three years of returns. And I did it this year in April I think.

All refunds over a certain amount are automatically sent in to audit. They are still clearing 2016 and 2017 audits unfortunately.

so i worked only the first 3 months of 2018 (Jan - Mar 2018) as I was told (by HR) that they only had approval to pay my salary up to then... and taxes(PAYE) were taken out for those months ...
I did NOT work anywhere else for the remainder of the year ...
However when I finally got the 2018 TD4 from the company (after several tries only got it yesterday) -the GROSS earnings stated is for the ENTIRE year (as if I worked the whole year - not the 3 months!) .... do you think the company calculated my TD4 in error - or is there something that I am overlooking ???

Mind you - there are other blatant inconsistencies in the TD4 - other than the GROSS EARNINGS column figure being about the same as a normal year (wherein I only worked 3 months) … - there is the WEEKS EMPLOYED column which states 9 wks (should be 13 though) ... INCOME TAX DED (PAYE) is a figure reflecting the WHOLE YEAR when it should be just 3 months .. NIS DED reflects a figure for 13 weeks .. HS COLUMNS (3 in all) reflects a figure of 13 weeks …

ANY SUGGESTION AS TO HOW TO APPROACH THIS ISSUE ????

That’s normal when companies would have under taxed you for the 3 months because they were estimating your taxes for the 12 months
