Fifa corruption: Jack Warner extradition proceedings approved

US extradition proceedings against Jack Warner, a former vice-president of football's world governing body Fifa, are to go ahead after being approved by Trinidad's attorney general.

The US wants to try Mr Warner, 72, a Trinidadian national, on corruption charges. He is accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes.

He and 13 other current or former Fifa officials were indicted in May.

He denies the charges and is currently fighting the extradition attempt.

Last week, Switzerland approved the extradition of ex-Fifa Vice-President Eugenio Figueredo to the US.

Mr Figueredo, from Uruguay, was arrested in May while in Switzerland for a Fifa congress.

So far, only one arrested official - former Fifa Vice-President Jeffrey Webb, from the Cayman Islands - has agreed to be extradited.

After being extradited from Switzerland to the US, Mr Webb pleaded not guilty to accepting bribes worth millions of dollars in connection with the sale of marketing rights.

He was placed under house arrest on $10m (£6.4m) bail by a New York judge.
The king of Caribbean football

As the head of Caribbean and North and Central American football (Concacaf), Mr Warner was one the most powerful men in world football.

His support was seen as essential for any World Cup host bid. However, he has been dogged by allegations of corruption.

The US alleges that Mr Warner has been involved in corrupt practices for more than two decades.

Mr Warner's case has been adjourned until Friday due to a legal dispute over a technicality.

In June 2015, a BBC investigation found evidence of bribes paid to Mr Warner.

Jack Warner: The US charge sheet

[*] Accused of racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering, bribery

[*] From the early 1990s, he allegedly "began to leverage his influence and exploit his official positions for personal gain"

[*] Allegedly accepted a $10m bribe from South African officials in return for voting to award them the 2010 World Cup

[*] Allegedly bribed officials with envelopes each containing $40,000 in cash; when one demurred, he allegedly said: "There are some people here who think they are more pious than thou. If you're pious, open a church, friends. Our business is our business"

Fifa: Sepp Blatter & Michel Platini investigated by ethics committee

Fifa president Sepp Blatter and European football chief Michel Platini are facing an investigation by Fifa's ethics committee.

The move comes after the Swiss attorney general opened criminal proceedings against Blatter, 79.

He is accused of signing a contract "unfavourable" to football's governing body and making a "disloyal payment" to Uefa president Platini, 60.

Blatter denies wrongdoing and his lawyer says he is co-operating fully.

The ethics committee is looking into the circumstances of a payment of two million Swiss francs (£1.35m) that Platini received in 2011 for work said to have been carried out more than nine years previously, reported the Press Association.

Swiss prosecutors opened criminal proceedings against Blatter on Friday.

Platini - who worked as Blatter's technical advisor between 1999 and 2002 - was interviewed as a witness by officers from the attorney general's office.

The Frenchman is yet to explain the nine-year delay in payment but he too denies any wrongdoing.

So now Platini has become implicated into a payment he received from FIFA.....

PLATINI AND VALKE NOW SUSPENDED

http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/34474231

Fifa has provisionally suspended its president Sepp Blatter, secretary general Jerome Valcke and vice-president Michel Platini for 90 days.

Former Fifa vice-president Chung Mong-joon has been banned for six years and fined 100,000 Swiss Francs (£67,000).

The punishments were handed out by the ethics committee of football's world governing body.

Blatter, Valcke and Uefa president Platini are being investigated by the committee over corruption allegations.

"The grounds for these decisions are the investigations that are being carried out by the investigatory chamber of the ethics committee," it said in a statement.

The three are banned from any football activity in the interim. They deny any wrongdoing

Quite possible yes. I honestly don't think Fifa or any football governing body will be corruption-free yes. Kickbacks, wheeling and dealing etc are just a part of business in world football

Fifa crisis: US charges 16 more officials after earlier Zurich arrests

US officials investigating corruption at football's world governing body Fifa have charged 16 more officials.

The new indictment, released by the Department of Justice in Washington, comes hours after the arrest of two Fifa vice-presidents in Zurich.

Former Brazil football federation chief Ricardo Teixeira was among those accused of being "involved in criminal schemes involving well over $200m (£132m) in bribes and kickbacks".

Fifa said it would "fully co-operate".

Current Brazil football president Marco Polo del Nero is also on the new "superseding" 92-count indictment, which alleges "racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies" with "sustained abuse of [the defendants'] positions for financial gain".

The current and former senior football executives charged are:

Alfredo Hawit - Concacaf president
Ariel Alvarado - ex-Panamanian football official
Rafael Callejas - former president of Honduras football
Brayan Jimenez - Guatemala FA chief
Rafael Salguero - Guatemalan Fifa executive committee member
Hector Trujillo - general secretary of Guatemala FA
Reynaldo Vasquez - former El Salvador FA president
Juan Angel Napout - Conmebol president
Manuel Burga - former Peru FA president
Carlos Chavez - Bolivia football president
Luis Chiriboga - Ecuador football president
Marco Polo del Nero - Brazil football president
Eduardo Deluca - Conmebol general secretary
Jose Luis Meiszner - former Conmebol secretary general
Romer Osuna - Bolivia football audit and compliance committee chief
Ricardo Teixeira - former Brazil FA chief

US attorney general Loretta Lynch said: "The betrayal of trust set forth here is outrageous. The scale of corruption alleged herein is unconscionable.

"And the message from this announcement should be clear to every culpable individual who remains in the shadows, hoping to evade our investigation: you will not wait us out; you will not escape our focus."

Earlier, Hawit and Napout were held in a dawn raid at the Baur au Lac hotel, Zurich, arrested on suspicion of accepting millions of dollars of bribes, at the request of the US authorities. The US is attempting to extradite them.

The Swiss hotel is the same location where several Fifa officials were arrested in May.

Fifa's executive committee has been meeting in the city, voting on reforms.
