That happened to me when I bought a fridge. Just before the warranty was up, it gave trouble. Went back to the store and they closed down, but the new business had the same stock and same workers, just a different name with different colors

Anything over 5 working days for a job letter is too long, and that is if you dealing with a head office on the other side of the country eh.

For payslips you should be getting that every month or pay period.

Couva/Point Lisas Chamber strongly supports new bid for ArcelorMittal plant

Image

Two years after multi-national steel company ArcelorMittal shut down its operation in Pt Lisas, a new company – Macarri Steel Holdings Ltd (MSH) – wants to buy those assets and revitalise TT's steel industry.

The proposal has the full support of the Couva/Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce (CPCC) and the Steel Workers Union of TT (SWUTT) – both of which met with MSH executives on Monday.

There is one prior bid under consideration, from US-based Nu-Iron, which already has a plant in Pt Lisas and which reportedly offered US$20 million for the plant.

MSH managing director Bijoy Nair Manipurath told Newsday his company has "a much superior offer" of US$350 million to restart operations and the re-hiring of the 2,000 workers who abruptly lost their jobs when the plant closed on March 11, 2016.

However as of July 30, Manipurath said he has not been able to submit a bit because the liquidator has repeatedly extended a lock-out period in the bidding process.

"Mr Kelshall says the responsibility of getting regulatory approvals lies on hands of current bidder, Nu-Iron. He says this is a legal process and he keeps extending the lock-out period for them."

SWUTT president Christopher Henry told Newsday, "MSH is making a higher offer, a better offer for the country and the workers. We understand the most recent extension ended on July 28 and the bidding process ends tomorrow (today - July 31). We are therefore calling on Mr Kelshall to give MSH the opportunity to submit an official bid."

MSH plans to make an initial injection of US$350 million to refurbish and restart operations. Then in a year to two years, invest another US$1.2 billion to $1.3 billion in the plant, creating over 5,000 direct jobs and indirect employment for the service industry.

"This is an opportunity to give the laid off workers an opportunity again to be employed, an opportunity for the country to earn foreign exchange. We hope MSH gets to meet with Kelshall to share their vision and to officially submit a bid to bring a new era of steel making in TT," Henry said.

CPCC president Ramchand Rajpal Maraj also expressed support for MSH's proposed bid, citing the economic benefits.

"We strongly urge the liquidator, Christopher Kelshall, to reopen the bidding to include Macarri’s bid," Maraj stated.

Withdraw US$20m bid

Steel workers union march to Nu-iron…

Image

FORMER steel workers, led by the Steel Workers Union of TT (SWU), marched to the Point Lisas Industrial Estate headquarters of Nu–Iron Unlimited to deliver a letter asking that their bid of US $20 M for the ArcelorMittal plant be withdrawn and the bidding process for the plant reopened.

SWU president Christopher Henry, who led the march from the union’s Southern Main Road, California offices, said rumours were circulating that Nu-Iron’s intention was to scrap 80 per cent of the plant and only rehire about 50 people to maintain a BR 3 module at the facility.

He said the union was instead working with another investor, Macarri Steel Holdings Limited which was willing to purchase the plant for a significantly larger amount while rehiring the retrenched workers.

Henry said a similar letter had been delivered to the plant’s liquidator on Monday asking him to reopen the bidding process to allow Macarri Steel to bid for the facility.

Under overcast conditions which gave way to periods of rain yesterday morning, over 200 workers marched to Nu-Iron’s headquarters where they were informed that no management official was at the facility to receive their letter.

They eventually left the letter with the plant’s security officers.

Henry said yesterday was the final day for Nu-Iron to submit a proposal to purchase the ArcelorMittal plant.

“We delivered a letter stating to them that it is not in the best interest of the workers or the country to shut the steel plant when it is still a viable entity. We also highlighted to them the denial of an opportunity with another investor who is offering more to take the plant and rehire the workers.

We also delivered a letter to the liquidator indicating that this entity which is Maccari Steel wants to purchase the plant for 100 per cent more than what Nu Iron is purchasing the plant for and they are willing to rehire all of the workers who were terminated.”

He said the US-based company is also willing to pump US $315 million by refurbishing the plant and by the construction of three other plants over a three year period.

He said the union had also delivered a letter to the liquidator asking him to not give an extension to Nu-iron and rather reopen the bidding process to allow Maccari an opportunity to submit a bid for the plant.

Dat eh sounding right. If Nu-Iron is unable to live up to the terms of its arrangement the liquidator should stop "brakesin'" for them, surely there must be a limit on how many extensions can be granted.

Something must be passin' under de table...:|

Which port? Anyone purchasing the AMPL site gets control of the existing port that AMPL had exclusive use of.

I'm guessing it's the same existing port. Don't have the specific details, hopefully a 2NR can chime in.

Union to government: Please save the steel industry

Image

PRESIDENT of the Steel Workers Union of TT (SWUTT) Christopher Henry today called on Government to do whatever is necessary to ensure that the bidding process for the ArcelorMittal plant, which is currently in liquidation, be reopened. The union is hoping that Macarri Steel Ltd, which has a bid of US $27 million be allowed to purchase the plant instead of the other bidder Nu-Iron Ltd. Nu-Iron is bidding US $20 million for the plant.

“The revenue stream that Macarri Steel will produce, compared to Nu-Iron, is like chalk and cheese. Macarri Steel on an annual basis would produce over $1 billion to the treasury in natural gas, water, and electricity. Nu-Iron will not be doing that,” Henry said.

He was speaking to reporters at a press conference held outside Tower C Waterfront in Port of Spain.

Henry said, since the closure of the plant at Point Lisas, two years and five months ago, about 80 per cent of the 2,000 terminated workers are still unemployed.

“These 644 permanent workers plus contract workers, which add up to about 2000 workers, will not have an opportunity to be reemployed in the steel industry with Nu-Iron. It will be a travesty for this government to continue to allow any multi-national to again come into this country and that advantage of its citizens,” Henry said.

In April, Macarri made a bid to purchase the plant although the bid round had closed at the end of September last year. So far the liquidator, who acts on behalf of ArcelorMittal, hasn’t acknowledged the bid. Macarri is willing to invest US $1.2 billion in three new plants, Henry said.

“The liquidator continues to extend the deadline for Nu-Iron to secure the plant. This is the fifth extension, at the end of this month. We are available to meet with the Finance Minister if he needs any further information from us. We are appealing to government and the Minister of Finance to listen to us,” Henry said.

I think they mean they will buy the plant at 27 million. If successful, they will then inject 350 million into it. It's like you buy a car in bad condition, then spend the money to bring it back.

Love how the union is making it as if Nu-Iron is doing something underhanded by being granted extensions to acquire AMPL. Nu-Iron's parent company is a Fortune 500 company who's CEO prolly has that 20 million in his pocket at any given time, so I doubt that it is a matter of not having the money. Something else is up.
