not true.
no status needed
but you need to travel there and goto IRS with your passport and apply for a tax id number.
then you may open an account. go for a smaller bank rather than the big banks

To open a bank account in the us, you need a ssn. International customers MAY be still granted an account depending on the bank, nature of business and other deciding factors, but this is a case by case procedure so you must go in person.

Was able to open one easily without a social security number.
Just took 2 forms of ID, and used a relative's address for all correspondence.

Many people I know have done the same. This was with Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

Got a US account with Wells Fargo for over almost 10 years now. U need to be in the US to open the account. Just a passport and a US mailing address were required.

Hope that helps

Because of the Western Hemisphere Security Initiative, all US account holders are required to provide a US SSN or Tax ID number. Any interest bearing account requires that a 1040 tax return be submitted also. If found to be fraudulent, a US bank account will be frozen and seized by the IRS with proceeds going to the escheats division.

According to the IRS thiz does not appear to be the case for Non Resident aliens.

Contact the bank you want to open the account with and they will send you the requirements for a non resident. Due to aml laws the requirements now have changed from 5 years ago and much more information is required. My statements are sent direct to me in trinidad. Just updated online banking for the account so now its paperless.
