official threads for alerts don't make sense, better have one thread for each alert event.

TRINIDAD and Tobago was rattled by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday night, and citizens are being reminded that the Big One is overdue so people need to prepare.

According to the University of the West Indies, Seismic Research Centre (SRC), the earthquake's location was a latitude of 10.15 North, longitude of 62.11 West with a depth of 10 kilometres. It happened at 9.36p.m.

SRC director Dr Joan Latchman said the tremor occurred in the Gulf of Paria and was felt in San Fernando, Port of Spain and Arima.

Latchman said that there has been 65 “events” for the year, ending in July, in the Gulf of Paria.

Eight events have been greater than 4.0 magnitude. On April 7, a 5.6 magnitude was registered making it one of the larger ones to have occurred in the Gulf of Paria, from the data collected up to the end of July.

Latchman said it is not unusual to expect an earthquake of 5.0 magnitude or higher occurring each year and this has been consistent.

Latchman said that the country is yet to experience a big tremor which can be very dangerous and which is long overdue.

“We are in a seismically active zone and we haven't seen one of the largest earthquakes in about 200 years,” she said.

Latchman said that as individuals, people can be prepared by having available simple things. [ODPM Earthquake Safety Guidelines attached].

She said a prepared hazard pack is necessary which should contain items of food, clothing, medications, radio, batteries and toiletries.

Latchman also said the layout on furniture in the house can prevent injury.

“Something as simple as where you place your furniture so that it does not topple over and hurt someone, is a way in which people can be prepared,” she said.

Latchman said that the authorities will have constraints and that people need to be prepared.

Apparently the Seismic Research Centre is in fear of having their funding cut. #sensationalist
