'Immediate' ban on Brazilian meat, plans to recall corned beef in T&T

Postby Jon Gill » March 21st, 2017, 3:05 pm

Minister of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries, Clarence Rambharat said government has placed a hold on the issuing of any new import permits for Brazilian meat, after claims the country was exporting rotten beef and poultry products.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Rambharat said import permits for corned beef as well as other meat products, including chicken nuggets, will not be issued while the matter is investigated, while moves are in place to recall corned beef from shelves.

"Immediate restriction on meat imports from Brazil. The Ministers of Agriculture, Trade and Industry and Health have been examining the meat scandal which has unfolded in Brazil."

"Our Chief Veterinary Officer has advised that import permits for processed meat products out of Brazil were issued by the Ministry to local importers, and these import permits were for corned beef packaged by one of the Brazilian companies implicated in the meat scandal. We also know that import permits were issued to one local company for chicken nuggets from Brazil."

"Until further notice, the Chief Veterinary Office will issue no permit for the importation of processed meat products from Brazil. This includes corned beef and chicken nuggets."

Additionally, Rambharat said steps are being taken to remove all corned beef products imported from Brazil off all supermarket shelves.

"We intend to pull all corned beef off the shelves. We are in the process of advising the (Trinidad and Tobago) Supermarkets Association."

"Many of the well-known brands on the local supermarket shelves originate from Brazil," Rambharat acknowleged.

Marketing Manager for Massy Stores, Anthony Choo Quan, told LoopTT that as far as the company knows, it has followed all regulatory requirements as the company's 'Pricesaver' corned beef was inspected and approved for export by the Brazilian government.

However, he added that the company will fully comply with any directives from Government including any recalls from their shelves.

Head of the Trinidad and Tobago Supermarkets Association, Dr Yununs Ibrahim, said the issue concerns proper food and drug testing of products coming into the country.

"This is definitely a matter for the Ministry of Health and the health inspectorate, and also the functionality of the health inspectors."

"These things are tracked at borders and testing is supposed to be done to ensure an adequate level of safety for the purpose of consumption."

Food testing is currently conducted by the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI) as officials at the Chemistry, Food and Drugs Division acknowledged in 2016 that its lab has not been functioning properly since 2014.

"A lot of corned beef does originate in Brazil and is used in competing brands," Dr Ibrahim admitted, but added that corned beef, being canned goods, would show signs if the meat was substandard, such as the swelling of cans.

On Monday, Jamaica placed a ban on the importation of corned beef from Brazil, from which 99.5 percent of the country's product originates.

The news was released on Saturday that some of Brazil's biggest meat processors have been accused of selling and exporting rotten beef and poultry.

The BBC reported that three Brazilian meat processing plants have also been closed and another 21 are under scrutiny.

The rotten meat is said to be produced by companies who export to Europe and other parts of the world.

Brazil is the world's largest red meat exporter.

'Operation Weak Flesh' was carried out in six Brazilian states after a two-year investigation.

Brazil's Agriculture Minister met with foreign ambassadors on Monday to reassure them and try to prevent trade sanctions.

The investigators allege that some managers bribed health inspectors and politicians to get government certificates for their products.

China and the European Union curtailed meat imports from Brazil on Monday after police, in an anti-corruption probe criticized by the government as alarmist, accused inspectors in the world's biggest exporter of beef and poultry of taking bribes to allow sales of rotten and salmonella-tainted meats.

As the scandal deepened, Brazil's Agriculture Minister Blairo Maggi said the government had suspended exports from 21 meat processing units.

But he also criticized the investigation by Brazil's Federal Police into meatpacking companies, calling their findings "alarmist" and saying they used a few isolated incidents to tarnish an entire industry that maintains rigorous standards.

An all-out ban on Brazilian meat exports would be a "disaster," Maggi added. "I pray, I hope, I work so that does not happen," he said, speaking to reporters outside his office in Brasilia.

With other import curbs expected to follow, the scandal stemming from a police operation codenamed "Weak Flesh" could deal a heavy blow to one of the few sectors of Latin America's largest economy that has thrived during a two-year recession.

Police on Friday named BRF SA (BRFS3.SA) and JBS SA (JBSS3.SA), along with dozens of smaller rivals, in a two-year probe into how meatpackers allegedly paid off inspectors to overlook practices including processing rotten meat, shipping exports with traces of salmonella and simply not carrying out inspections of plants.

JBS is the world's largest meat producer and BRF the biggest poultry exporter.

The companies have denied any wrongdoing, and authorities have said no cases of death or illness have been linked to the tainted meat investigation.

New allegations of unsavory business practices in Brazil come as the country is still reeling from a massive graft scandal centered on state-controlled oil company Petrobras (PETR4.SA) that is widening into other sectors.

Brazil can ill afford this given the huge slump in commodity prices that has affected their economy drastically so far. Not to mention the on going Petrobras scandal which has already claimed a sitting President's scalp and a bankrupt city of Rio and this is a real country in catastrophe.

What is happening with permits already issued? Are we going to see products still coming in?

.............Marketing Manager for Massy Stores, Anthony Choo Quan, told LoopTT that as far as the company knows, it has followed all regulatory requirements as the company's 'Pricesaver' corned beef was inspected and approved for export by the Brazilian government........... Are these persons for real?

who was it bought from in Brazil? Anthony Chew Can would be advised to stop playing stupid or else get a nationwide ban on ALL their companies and associates ........ and can start Chewing on corned beef.

Adversity is just another opportunity to engage in the same crookedery with different players .........

Trying to understand the statements from the Neal and Massey representative . In as far as the ban from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Production , we timed and shows a quick decision from a Ministry to protect the citizenry.

In fact all meat from Brazil should be banned until satisfactory standards of international food processing are stipulated and adhered to.

As much as possible I try to by local meats , Chicken , fish , New Zealand beef where available , Salomon well that is imported as well as Angus Beef.

they actually sell real salted beef in the markets you know. Not that salty canned nasty mush they call corned beef here. It actually looks like this when you slice it after washing and roasting.

All the canned beef mush comes from Brazil, just branded for different companies in the same factory.

yes i know, that was a method of storage for long sea voyages and wartime rations. But you can actually get real, good corned beef in the market. If you prefer the mush, then go ahead. Simply telling them above that there are options.
