'Total collapse' of business in Tobago, says Tobago Chamber

Approximately 34 small businesses have already closed in Tobago, with another 12 that may shut down in the next few months, according to President of the Inter-Island Transport Committee of the Tobago Chamber, Diane Hadad.

"We have 34 or so businesses that have already closed, the information shows that we have another 12 or so that may go in another month or two."

Speaking on the Morning Edition Program on TV6, Hadad said that over 60 percent of businesses had been shut down as a result of the lack of business resulting from inter-island transportation issues.

She said the Chamber is doing surveys at the moment to assess the scope of the damage.

"There's been no business, (the) loss in business has been something like 60-something percent...there's no business, that's total collapse."

"I'm not sure how long others can hold on...it's going to take a very long time to recover (from) this."

She added that business has dwindled to the point where the shortage of goods makes no difference compared to the lack of demand on the island.

"There's no talk about the good not coming because the goods not selling," she said.

Speaking with reference to a planned shutdown by Tobago businesses, she said at this point, she's not sure how much help a shut-down would be.

"What we intend to do and don't intend to do, I'm not sure. I don't know that shutting down is going to have an effect on anything...there are other options on the table and if it has to be in conjunction with a shutdown then so be it," she said.

Meanwhile, minority leader Watson Duke said Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley should apologise for the damage that has been done to Tobago under the present government.

"I'm calling on the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago to apologise to the people after lying to them for month after month," Duke said.

On Monday, it was announced that both the T&T Express and the T&T Spirit would be out of commission until March 22, leaving only the Cabo Star to provide transportation for the sea bridge.

Passengers with confirmed ferry tickets for the period March 10 - March 22 will be provided with seats on Caribbean Airlines flights at no extra cost.

The recently purchased Galleon's Passage is still en route to Trinidad and Tobago and is scheduled to arrive at the end of April.

Isn't Tobago sure PNM territory? Why would they be crying; their party won.

Nope
1995 - NAR won both seats
1997 - NAR won the Tobago East Bye Election (Morgan Job replaced ANR Robinson)
2000 - NAR won Tobago East
2001 - PNM won both seats
2002 PNM won both seats
2007 - PNM won both seats
2010 - TOP won both seats
2015 - PNM won both seats

Compared to the Port of Spain, Laventille and Diego Seats which have never changed hands in that time, Tobago can be viewed as somewhat of a swing place.

Young bronto is one kyatt.

Even if u don't consider her trip is just maxing out on the tax payers bill, she can't just go to exhibit Tobago, without the people who will be exhibited..
Is like she selling sumting that isn't prepared to sell. It utter disrespect and Inconsiderate for those who actually have to entertain the tourists.

Her attitude is basic

She seems to have been selected as a candidate solely on market style, guntress behaviour as a Senator. Now of course, having to actually perform, not unlike JUHN Scarfy, Arse-Wari, Dullon, Goebbels Young etc, they are failing miserably.
