Portable generator to connect to house panel

Postby redmanjp » October 21st, 2017, 1:46 pm

Anywhere sells portable generators that you can connect to your house braker panel to power the house?

I was browsing Generac's website and they had some models that could do that once you have a manual transfer switch

Considering about 6000 running watts

ttec frowns upon this practice due to the technical and dangerous nature of it

But they allow it still right? The transfer switch supposed to function the same way as one in a normal standby generator in that it disconnects the house from the main utility connection

I think what you are requesting is not allowed if not illegal.

You need a transfer switch and an inspection to be done upon completion.

You would have to get a generator licence from t&tec if you want connect it to your panel. I suggest you contact them before purchasing the generator.

Please don't try a thing and just install it. You can have feedback on the line and kill someone. This has happened several years ago at Pier 1. They had an unlicensed generator that turned on and fed back to the circuit when a guy was working on a line that was supposed to be dead.

it is safer to run a subpanel which generator is connected to only and not ttec
and you unplug your fridge etc and plug into outlets off of this panel when you need to use generator

the method where you rely on a transfer switch which can cause mixups are what ttec frowns upon.
if you going that route you should seek a professional installer
and inspection and associated "inspection fees"

I actual went to see a house recently and the owner had a generator wired to a separate sub panel. All lights and plugs were identified as the generator source. Dat was kool. Also, his generator was the pull chain type. Not sure if dats the correct term. Could this be wired to a push button start?

According to make and model it would have different staring mechanisms. Just remember, convenience equals more money.

You still need to contact ttec an tell them, once as they supplying you with power an your intentions is to install a standby generator they will have to see the electrical configuration switching from normal power to standby power

Amm....ok i bought the property with a generator so it is already there. The generator is in no way connected to ttec system and i intend to keep it that way. As i said it is independent from ttec with its own distribution panel supplying its own receptacles and lights. Again the wiring is completely separate from ttec,
