I see I'm not the only one tryna encourage hummingbirds in the yard. We have a few feeders scattered. There's about 10+ of then that frequent the yard early morning, late afternoon. Quite a variety too... About 4-5 differ typestimelapse wrote:My small front yard
Back in my school days what I remember was for clay type soils, ploughing grass into it and letting it rot and become manure, after a while loosens the clay particles and you get something nice, between clayey and sandy soil. Might need to do it more than once tho.Hinds wrote:I’m in need of some advice. My yard is made up mainly of heavy clay and I am interested in establishing some lawn. It has about a 2inch layer of sandfill but I need to add about 3 more inches to properly level out the yard. I was advised not to use anymore sandfill but quality soil is something hard to come by lately. Any advice on how to proceed? It’s approximately 3500sqft of land
if you not in a hurry, lets say about a month, sharpsand and cow manure at a 1/1 ratio will do you well.Just spread and leave to settle for about 4 weeks.Hinds wrote:I’m in need of some advice. If it is cured , you can use right away, but make sure it is cured.Too strong and your grass will burn. You can layer it on top,if its just grass you are planting. For other stuff ,you can dig holes and use the same mixture as is, in the holes.Watering and rain will mix the soil better than you or I ever can.Introduce some earthworms as wellHinds wrote:timelapse wrote:if you not in a hurry, lets say about a month, sharpsand and cow manure at a 1/1 ratio will do you well.Just spread and leave to settle for about 4 weeks.Hinds wrote:I’m in need of some advice. Hmm ok, does it matter if the manure is cured or not? Do I mix it into the clay or layer it on top?
You typically work the materials into the soil. Use a long-handled cultivator if you only only have a smaller area like half of a lot.Hinds wrote:timelapse wrote:if you not in a hurry, lets say about a month, sharpsand and cow manure at a 1/1 ratio will do you well.Just spread and leave to settle for about 4 weeks.Hinds wrote:I’m in need of some advice. Op i had the same problem you had. I stuck with sandfill as it much cheaper than top soil. But many people would advise against sandfill if you have to plant anything because the soil is "dead", dont contain any organic matter, acidic, blah blah. I used sandfill, bought a bag of limestone and sprinkled over the area ( a feedbag of limestone is about $65). Watered with liquid manure (liquid litter) and 20.20.20+me (nutrex). Planted zoysia grass. It took a while for grass to grow, but it did eventually and even with this hot dry weather we getting recently, lawn still holding up and i don't even water it. This worked for me and it's a much cheaper option than buying topsoil which is about $250 a yard as opposed to sandfill which is $400 for 10 yards.Hinds wrote:I’m in need of some advice.
