Average cost to clear a phone via courier company.

Postby diamonds are forever » December 6th, 2018, 5:27 pm

Hey guys just looking for some feedback on the average cost to clear a phone via different courier companies and also does the cost of the phone play a factor in the final price to clear it. Looking at my options to bring in a phone if its cost effective or just to buy it locally.

Yes, the cost of the phone does play a factor in final price to clear it and most courier websites have calculators that are fairly straightforward to use.

Here's one example:

Here's the official skybox thread where you may be able to find more information:

Duty on cellphones is 20% of the cost of the phone and shipping added to the actual phone price. Then add 12.5% VAT to that. Shipping even through a skybox like Tropical Express or others usually isn't so costly..it's the duty/VAT that will add to the cost. Most skybox companies have built-in shipping calculators on their websites though. Hope that helps.

Knew about the duty, vat and also the shipping calculators. Its just that the shipping calculators are always way above the cost to actually clear the item. Knew a guy who brought in a note 5 about 2 years ago and it only cost him a little over 200 TTD to clear. The calculator at that time gave a cost of over 1000 TTD. All of the various skyboxes I used have the same problem.

My calculator is usually pretty close. Plus, not jelly, but if your partner brought in a Note 5 for $200 or so, then he probably severely understated the cost or something, which is illegal btw. But...............

All things being equal, the cost to clear (shipping, duty, surcharge, plus VAT) will likely be one-half your phone purchase price.

P×1.125×1.2×1.07=1.4445P

^ wouldn't this result in the cost to clear being more than the actual phone purchase price?

This is simply the approximate total cost.

P is what you paid or "landed cost". So, if you see a phone online, the cost to get it in your hands is about 1.5 times the price (one-half more) than what you paid the retailer.

The price is less if you ship trans-ocean (no 7% surcharge) instead of trans-air.

It is hit and miss as always.

Bought 2 200USD phones at different times. Paid $250 to clear the first and $600 for the second.

The charge for the second phone was close to correct while the first was just a happy bligh.

Either hit and miss, or maybe it depends on if they find that the deal you get looks too good.

I bought a G6 some time ago on sale - went from ~600+something to $400 US, i got charged $1100TT to collect it.
(all taxes & shipping) which is about 40%

Bought a Nokia 6.1 a few months later for $230US, I got charged about $200TT to collect it.
(all taxes & shipping) which is about 13%

So I not sure which one is correct and which is bligh.
