Laws for heavy equipment on public roads

Postby jhonnieblue » July 31st, 2019, 3:51 pm

Are there any laws that specifically address the use and movement of excavators or other heavy equipment on public roads?

I checked the highways act and road traffic act but no luck.

The law is - pay the Police cash to escort you and they always have vehicles available for that assisgnment..

i've always said that the traffic wardens could have been given some vehicles for this purpose, instead of police using police vehicles to escort old iron all over the place...

Not escort per say but actual transit of the vehicle self powered. Have an excavator by me and it always coming onto the road and dumps mud from the tracks etc while moving across from on point to another. Want to see what is the law relating to this.

If the excavator does not have a license number, its not supposed to be on the public road at all....only on a trailer.

But the trailer is licensed for the road and to carry heavy equipment ,so why the need for a police escort? Is just a station hustle.

You can't have unregistered vehicles on public roads cause they are not insured for road use. Some of these vehicles carry an "X" plate and can be used on the road providing it's insured.

Any use of public or part public road is illegal when using unregistered vehicles but like every thing else in TT who's going to uphold these laws.

Thanks zoomie, this is exactly the answer I was looking for.
Do you have the specific piece of legislation that states this ?

i think the only reason you'll need police escort would be the extra large equipment that project beyond the width and length allowed by law, e.g. a bulldozer with a wide bucket will need an escort, unless the owner detaches it . You'll see the police signalling you to pull to the side of the road.

What about if it cannot cross a certain speed? Like the crane that was involved in the fatal accident by the traffic lights some time back?

I see police escorting some trucks hauling load and I am of the impression that there is a certain speed involved.
