https://trinidadexpress.com/newsextra/t ... ium=social'The PNM does not control the cops'POLICE Commissioner Gary Griffith has said the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is an independent body and not controlled by the People’s National Movement (PNM) Government.
Without calling names, Griffith yesterday criticised Opposition Senator Anita Haynes who said Government was moving to have certain Opposition MPs arrested ahead of the 2020 general election.
In a statement, the Commissioner rubbished this comment, describing it as “reckless”.
He pointed out that the Police Service had cleared former prime minister and current Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar of wrongdoing in two matters—Emailgate and the investigation of a then-illegal amount of drugs found outside her home.
Griffith also recalled that the police worked to arrest and charge Marlene McDonald, a sitting Government minister.
“It is highly unlikely that a Government would direct and order the TTPS to arrest one of their own, or direct the TTPS to clear an Opposition Leader of allegations, hence showing the baseless accusations by anyone to allude that the TTPS could be directed to arrest anyone by any political party or government. This has absolutely no merit,” he stated.
In response, Haynes told the Express she understood the Commissioner’s statement but the comments made by National Security Minister Stuart Young were reckless.
“For almost the entirety of their term in office the PNM has made unfounded, baseless and rash claims in attempts to paint their opponents in a negative light, and stir up fear and tension among the population...We maintain that the statements made by the Minister of National Security are reckless, and show that he is unfit for the office he holds,” she said.
On Monday, Young said in a CNC3 interview that some sitting members of Parliament were under investigation by police for having ties to the criminal underworld.
‘Highly inappropriate
and reckless’
Yesterday Griffith stated that with the upcoming general election campaign the TTPS was aware that political parties may be inclined to make comments to achieve their objectives.
“The TTPS wishes to advise them that it is highly inappropriate and reckless to pull an independent institution such as the TTPS into their campaigning, via alluding that the TTPS can be influenced or directed by any political body, or even the Government,” he stated.
“The CoP wishes to ask any individual who believes he/she has evidence that can confirm that any police officer can forget his sworn oath of impartiality, and can be easily manipulated to commit such act, such actions would be in blatant breach of the TTPS regulations and such officers would be immediately investigated. Likewise, to make such a statement, alludes that the Police Service is a tool of a Government and can and would act based on such illegal and unauthorised directions,” he stated.
He said under his leadership the TTPS would not in any way be influenced or directed by any citizen of the country to abuse their authority, inclusive of politicians on any side.
