"Does any of have had someone send you a package from abroad?"

If you get it thru ttpost, they will hold the package and you will have to pay to get it.
Ttpost might underinvoice it, so it might be cheaper than skybox. Dunno how/why they do this

Is this true even if the item is a gift from someone?

Of course, the way around this is to tell the original shipper to use a fake invoice and say used or refurbished.

Yeah, but only if you in a hurry and don't mind paying with an arm and a leg and a kidney with a promise to give them your firstborn

They do it so customers will pick them next time, the fact of the matter is Taxes on electronics are far too high especially something like a smartphone which again is an EDUCATIONAL device. These are NOT luxury items a phone is used for communication which is extremely important in cases of emergency.
The fact that we still pay taxes on them is a joke in all honesty, or at least reduce the taxes or tax it after a certain price so those who can afford latest iphones for $8000 let them pay the full price.
Users who pay $3000 or less for a phone should be exempted.

They can't even get the applications of taxes and duties right, but is exemptions you want?
You paying VAT not only on the value of the items, but on import duty & OPT as well. You feel that was accidental?

VAT is based on value added. When you pay customs duty and OPT, you add value to the item.

Brilliant! I would have never thought of that. You should be a Minister in the Ministry of Finance.
