Plastic Chairs Repainting ?????

Postby Premchand1976 » May 23rd, 2020, 5:09 pm

Have a couple ( about 18 ) good material chairs ( not the thin , flimsy plastic material around in recent times ) , they started losing the colour and paint kinda get chalky on the armrests etc. Was thinking about sanding them out , plastic priming them and repainting and clearcoating, what's your take on this idea guys ??? Would it work, would the paint hold etc???

If you counting man-hours/cost, it will be cheaper to buy new ones.

monobloc chairs are meant to be disposable. They were designed as a cheap molded mass produced polypropylene plastic crap... not exactly shaker furniture. After a few years the plastic degrades into flaky dust with UV exposure. They get micro-cracks which grow into big cracks and failures at the joints.

So just throw them in your nearest river and let eventually reach the ocean and kill a few whales and seals, and buy new ones.

I have painted mine a few times over. No issues. Over 16yrs old and used whatever remaining oil paint I had from general painting around the house.

It's difficult to paint but it can be done. You'll need to either rough sand it so that the paint will stick or you can flame treat it. I have gotten a couple of years without too much flaking and you can spot treat any failed areas.

Lol a paint brush and some oil paint. Light sand paper to ruff up before you paint. Some very mild soap water to rinse after sanding. Good dry and go to town with the painting.

Sand , use plastic primer and use 2k paint . No need for clearcoat . It's just like painting a bumper.

Paint them brown you cant go wrong..or dark grey etc..

Did some recently with some good spraypaint with the broad nozzle..a can or a bit less a chair if you careful.
Just give them a half sand and spray and you good..you dont have to paint underneath ..

You could even use a good brush with some good oil paint ..

Took a lil.over an hour to do 14 chairs ....gonna check the paint shop tmre for advice on paints and clearcoating, if feasible , or any finish that gonna stay a while .....if I get a 2-3 years off these I happy...they over 10 yrs old, and have been unused for the last 2-3 years.

If they aren’t cracked then repaint them with the Tremclad spray paint. Don’t throw them out.

With the UV damange, you will have to sand properly or else the paint will not hold.
Scrubbing alone may not be enough. Might have to sand out all the flaking. might need medium/rough grit sandpaper and a wet sand with plenty water

I did it for 4 chairs and it was a real PITA, much less for 18.

One thing to note is that with the damage you sharing there if it's UV damage like I suspect, the chairs actually get quite brittle and can't take the load it used to when new.
