WTK: Where can I find waterproofing sprays and cedar shoe trees for leather and suede shoes, locally?

Postby Energy0091 » July 5th, 2020, 4:53 pm

I’m in need of waterproofing sprays for my shoes, especially with this wetter than average rainy season that we’ll be expecting.
I can’t order the good kinds online because of the restrictions on aerosols and flammable items so I’d like to know where can I get them locally.
Also, I think I wanna check out shoe trees locally. I get them online but I guess I want to scope out what’s available here.
Thanks.

what restrictions you talking about?
Aerosols, flammable items, electrically charged items, toxic or corrosive fluids, pressurized vessels, etc, these are considered hazmat, but they are still shipped here via skybox.

what skybox tell you such items restricted & can't be imported?

I’m with WebSource and the last time I ordered a tin of waterproofing spray (In February) it was confiscated and discarded.

It was probably confiscated (by skybox employee) & discarded (in their house).

solution- Find another better skybox.
It have so many other skybox companies out here that bringing in whatever you want when you want, seems odd to limit oneself to a company that puts restrictions on what you can ship.

Sea freight couriers do not have these restrictions on aerosols. SeaBox is one option.

Here are some points OP:

1. If you have leather shoes don't use any waterproofing silicone sprays. They have for nubuck and suede, but what this does is clog up the pores of leather and it can't breathe. It destroys the leather long-term. Use dubbin or mink oil on leather and do it every few months to treat the leather.

2. They're so things won't stick to the shoes, like mud and road salt or walking through slushy snow during winter in those countries. It can't really waterproof your shoes with open seams and lace holes, etc. Application of such a spray for what you imagine it does is not correct. Waterproofing spray also doesn't last long, you need to re-apply them on shoes and boots every week for it to work properly.

3. You know 3M Scotchguard, found in every hardware, is the same thing right? They have a whole range of Scotchguard products, including one for suede shoes. Check big places like Bhagwansingh's and Allied Home Center and L&D.

I used this recently and it works decently. Under heavy wear it will need to be reapplied more often. Like maj. tom said, seams and lace holes are still a vulnerability.

There is a shoe repair shop of a name unknown to me in Long Circular Mall that has both in their window. You may find the same at other shoe repair shops.

You can try Mink Oil for shoes. It conditions and increases water resistance.

You can also waterproof leather with wax or mineral oil.

That’s an interesting option. I will look into it.
I was about to try this one:

That's a leather conditioner.
You can find Armor All leather conditioner locally gel/spray that does the same.
ImageImage

All that is, is basically saddle soap which cleans and conditions the leather from dirt and cracks, etc. It wets the leather, cleans it, and then conditions it with mink oil that's in the conditioner. Leather scratches will fade over time with application. It's not as dramatic as in the pictures. Saddle soap makes leather very soft and luxurious so you have to be careful about boot applications.

So in summary, all you need to care for your leather boots (not suede/nubuck) is a shoe brush, saddle soap (for deep cleaning) and Dubbin/Mink Oil (I've read that commercially this is really purified ultra-filtered pig lard) for conditioning. I made the saddle soap myself with Ivory soap and mink oil mixed with a little paraffin oil B.P.

https://saphir.com/products/
google it. Been watching those "gentlemen" youtube vids for suits, and shoe protection was part of the vids. BTW, water proofers made for dress leather shoes will not cause damage. Those products are on the expensive side and I have not bought them as yet so no experience with them.
