The moon is sprinkled with patches of frozen water, NASA scientists discovered. Mining it may be crucial for travel to Mars and beyond.

NASA scientists have discovered new caches of water hidden across the moon's surface.

Water could be a crucial resource for astronaut missions to Mars, since ice can be converted into rocket fuel.

In a new study, a space plane detected the signal for H2O on the moon's surface. Other new research found small, permanent shadows where water ice could survive on the lunar surface.

NASA's next moon rover will investigate water-rich regions of the moon.

That's nice NASA, credit to India who discovered water in craters on the moon since 2008 with Chandrayaan-1, stating "the most definitive proof to date" of the presence of water in shaded regions of craters near the Moon's north and south poles.

It was frozen since its creation of Earth's impact with Theia 4.5 billion years ago, so there won't have had a chance of life to evolve. One of the pre-requisites of life is liquid water and at least 17°C so biochemistry reactions can occur. Water found on Mars has the promise of finding ancient microscopic life however.

The reason why it's so exciting for is because it is an independent source of energy for human habitats in the future without needing to tote it out of Earth's gravity at 11km/s.
