DIY: Repainting Vanished/Lacquered kitchen cupboard with different color…

Postby newto4x4 » June 19th, 2021, 3:24 pm

Wants to try a lil kitchen makeover.
It’s mahogany that was sprayed painted, done over 25 years.
I am planning to sand down and paint with silver grey oil paint. (To match fridge color)
Will this hold on the varnish or I have to use paint remover?
Thanks.

Sand with 180-220 and paint. No issues if it was regular oil varnish.

I guess the first thing to do is find the missing cupboard door. Then sand and paint in a small area before doing them all.

You will need to use an oil-based primer coat on the sanded varnish prior to the finish coat.

DIY: Repainting Vanished/Lacquered kitchen cupboard with different color…

Postby Jerry84 » June 28th, 2021, 8:04 pm

I have something similar to this to do. My intention is to spray the cupboard with a color of my choice. Was advised to use car paint. I wanted to make this a diy project but my obstacle is mixing the paint. I have compressor and spray gun already. Any advice?

Op sorry for the hijack!!

I did a wooden open front cabinet for my office and painted it in car paint and clear coat. Spraying the paint and clear gives a very even gloss - looks like resin or steel.

Get a mixing cup at the paint shop, it shows the ratios on the side, real easy. Just confirm with the seller what ratios activator and reducer (hardner& thinner) is required and you good.

Car paint on kitchen cabinets is a secret of the trade :D

It is VERY easy to clean - seen some kitchens ( and some of the pots ) on Tuner and OMG ! it's untenable .

What you have on top Jerry ?

Cause "Granite Slab"s so inexpensive and it comes with already installed "Bull Nose"
