Uwi literally only serves the english speaking caribbean though. Not sure what they expect ppl to do with this information. Most ppl on the caribbean only choose UWI because it's the only option and they may not be able to afford overseas study. I'm sure if you give UWI students the option of paid overseas study UWI would be empty.

They need to stop chasing rankings and find ways to become profitable and sustainable.

That is utter bs UWI, how did they arrive at that because on the university rankings site UWI is ranked 400-500 in the world out of 2112 universities.

That puts them a in the top 20% which is more realistic.

At top 1.5% UWI would be ahead of world class places like kings college, Georgia tech, university of Tokyo and McGill university. ....lol and that is just ludicrous

What's the point of these rankings for UWI though? It's not like they are trying to attract international students. A uwi certificate would never be valuable to someone from the developed world and other developing countries have their own universities to rival UWI's quality.

So these rankings don't tell us much about anything to be honest. UWI needs to focus on improving its product and quality. Most of the leaders in the caribbean are UWI graduates. That should maybe tell us something?

That's not fair though. You are completely forgetting financial constraints that UWI and the caribbean islands have to contend with. A university such as Harvard has an endowment fund that is probably larger than the combined gdps of the entire english speaking caribbean. Universities are run by money. UWI is more or less run by the caribbean states. Which is why these rankings are pointless because UWI isn't meant to be globally competitive but to provide tertiary education in a region where the average person probably can't and will never be able to afford foreign tertiary education.

What you are saying is not fair.

If a school is good enough, it's good enough. Financial constraints are a REASON it's not good enough but doesn't change the fact it's not comparable to better schools.

Well no. You can't compare UWI to schools such as Harvard, Oxford, McGill etc because those schools cater for a particular class of students/people. The elites in USA, England and Canada attend those schools. They are not only wealthy but also mostly white so they come from extremely privilege backgrounds. A glimpse of the uwi population would show that their students are the polar opposite. They live in the less developed part of the world and don't have financial means as their counterparts in the US/Canada or UK. So unless you are going to even the playing field before comparing it makes no sense to compare both.

They both are good at what they do and they both live in their own separate worlds.

UWI is not good, it's the best we have available but the institution is run by backward thinking lazy, egotistical jsckasses who care very little about encouraging innovation, research and keeping up to date. I know quite a few lecturers who are trying, really really commend these guys, but they are often held back and frustrated with the institution.

Maybe in time when those dinosaurs retire or die things will change for the better

Yes you can definitely compare two schools and say which is better than the other. It's not about who cater for a particular class or not.

A degree is mostly about getting a job. If a manager is looking at two identical applications except for different schools and 9 or 10/10 times he chooses the better school then obviously that school is better.

Come on man, listen to yourself.

Harvard is a better school than UWI.

University of Florida is a better school than UWI.

These are better schools than UWI. Come on man, listen to yourself. Face facts and stop living in denial.

This conversation is too ridiculous to be having.

All those schools are only better because their financial status allow them to be better. Those schools are not located in the developing world. They are located in the wealthiest nation on the planet. Harvard is also better than 99.9 percent of the universities on the planet. This includes universities in the UK, Germany,Eu, Singapore, Japan etc. Why would I compare a pipsqueek such as Uwi to Harvard? I would compare Harvard to Oxbridge, McGills of the world and not Uwi.

Harvard's endowment fund is 40 billion usd. That's about 280 billion tt dollars. It's literally chalk and cheese to even compare the two.

You are assuming that a Harvard grad and a UWI grad are ever in the same conversation or recruitment pool. Most harvard grads etc are directly recruited so they never need to be in a pile of resumes or even if they're in a pile then they are in a pile of similar gradutes.

You all are seriously downplaying just how influential those universities are. UWI could never be compared or even be in the same topic of conversation as them. It's not fair on UWI.

What do you guys think about the UWI vs UTT debate? I'm seeing more teachers getting into the system from UTT than UWI.
Why do utt graduates get jobs faster than uwi.

From what I hear it's the opposite. Uwi conferring traditional Bsc degrees vs utt bachelor of applied science degree commands a higher respect and greater demand in the industries. Not sure about teaching though

UTT had a pipeline into primary and secondary school teaching through the former teachers' college system that was absorbed into the UTT ecosystem.

UWI and UTT shouldn't be competing with each other. We don't have that big a student population to have universities competing with each other. They should simply specialise and offer different programs. UTT should be more trinidad/industry specific though and better funded than UWI which is basically a regional university shared between all islands.

The problem with UWI is that it does not prepare the graduate for the world of work. From what I hear UTT does a better job at it...

Dude, no one cares about the financial status of whatever when applying to a school.

If someone wants a better life/better job...they're going to apply to a better school.

There are better schools in the world. Deal with it.

Clearly you don't know how to select a university. People literally check the financial status of a school before applying.

Again, a person applying to Harvard and UWI are two completely different types of people. Can't compare both.
