Dohplaydat wrote:That is utter bs UWI, how did they arrive at that because on the university rankings site UWI is ranked 400-500 in the world out of 2112 universities.
That puts them a in the top 20% which is more realistic.

Exactly what I saw...
Really want to know where that 1.5% came from.

20% is even too good for UWI.
UWI is a dump. Those that went to foreign schools would know.

That's not fair though. You are completely forgetting financial constraints that UWI and the caribbean islands have to contend with. A university such as Harvard has an endowment fund that is probably larger than the combined gdps of the entire english speaking caribbean. Universities are run by money. UWI is more or less run by the caribbean states. Which is why these rankings are pointless because UWI isn't meant to be globally competitive but to provide tertiary education in a region where the average person probably can't and will never be able to afford foreign tertiary education.

What you are saying is not fair.
If a school is good enough, it's good enough. Financial constraints are a REASON it's not good enough but doesn't change the fact it's not comparable to better schools.

Well no. You can't compare UWI to schools such as Harvard, Oxford, McGill etc because those schools cater for a particular class of students/people. The elites in USA, England and Canada attend those schools. They are not only wealthy but also mostly white so they come from extremely privilege backgrounds. A glimpse of the uwi population would show that their students are the polar opposite. They live in the less developed part of the world and don't have financial means as their counterparts in the US/Canada or UK. So unless you are going to even the playing field before comparing it makes no sense to compare both.
They both are good at what they do and they both live in their own separate worlds.

Redress10 wrote:All those schools are only better because their financial status allow them to be better. Those schools are not located in the developing world. They are located in the wealthiest nation on the planet. Harvard is also better than 99.9 percent of the universities on the planet. Harvard's endowment fund is 40 billion usd. That's about 280 billion tt dollars. It's literally chalk and cheese to even compare the two.
You are assuming that a Harvard grad and a UWI grad are ever in the same conversation or recruitment pool. Most harvard grads etc are directly recruited so they never need to be in a pile of resumes or even if they're in a pile then they are in a pile of similar gradutes.
You all are seriously downplaying just how influential those universities are. UWI could never be compared or even be in the same topic of conversation as them. It's not fair on UWI.

Dude, no one cares about the financial status of whatever when applying to a school.
If someone wants a better life/better job...they're going to apply to a better school.
There are better schools in the world. Deal with it.
